Depends on the chainline you'll like to achieve, each spacer is 2.5mm.
It's possible to move it a little, but your cranks will be offset, which mostly won't be noticed but would annoy me.

Bigger chainrings is a pain with the Shimano MTB ones and their BCD, possible but you've also got a wider q factor and usually chainline, although there's a couple of options for that. Hope would be good, possibly praxis and raceface options too.

Brader, MTB cranks on a 120 spaced rear frame, you know better what I'm talking about... tsk tsk tsk...
-
• #8055
What are we talking here? I've been running a 32T and it's a bit too small given I've mostly been using the Surly on the road, especially now as it has aerobars fitted. Fuckin' love me some aerobars, I do!
Q-factor is less of an issue I reckon. I'm wearing flat shoes and I don't even know what q-factor was on the Middleburn cranks I removed. Forgot about Praxis and haven't seen RaceFace cranks on anything since I think my old trials bike..

I've already got a Shimano 24mm 68/73mm BB but I guess I can just fuck that off with the cranks. Will a Cadet M30 work for me though?
There's a 165mm set on ebay, but I'd need bigger chainring

fuck is an M30 BB?
Shimano Saint, 73mm, 165mm £229 though without chainring

Those saints are a bit easier as they're the older, symmetrical BCD with a few more chainring options. I've got a set of asymmetric deore and managed to find a 38t from somewhere on Ali express, I think wolftooth make a very expensive one too.
Praxis M30 BB is a BB made by praxis for their M30 axled cranks. -

I'd prefer to keep the parts as boring/standard as I can so symmetrical and no funny BBs.
I posted a Wanted and someone's checking their SLX cranks for me...

Not the first bit of bad news today
At least we wont have to read about Hippy's never-ending painful bike maintenance for much longer. Every cloud.
-
• #8059
Oh I've created a sub thingie just for that.
The silver lining with the bike industry going down the toilet is hopefully fewer fucking "standards" that I have to remember.
Now get me some new cranks. I have a half day today and can't even ride the bastard bike.

Why not go for XT or SLX direct mount?
Some deals to be had depending on arm length and chainring size.

Does anyone know anything about these Sram S1000 cranks? Are they any good?
They came on a used bike I bought but the BB is worn and it needs a 30mm BSA BB.
Seems like only Rotor sells these and they are not cheap, is it worth spending money on a new one?

They are low end SRAM cranks, so quite heavy, but there's nothing 'wrong' with them. Is the price of a new BB more than the price of a replacement crankset and a new BB from a different standard? The good thing about those cranks is that they still use cheap and easily replaceable chainrings rather than direct mount.

Yeah, I'm waiting to see what @Bossman has over here:
https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/401486/Do they make 40T chainrings for them though? Doesn't have to be 40T but needs to be something bigger than 32T.
-
• #8064
Loads of BSA 30 options available, Hope, Wheels MFG etc. All also not that cheap though
-
• #8065
Shimano's own offering only goes up to 38T but you should be able to get aftermarket stuff in =>40.
-
• #8066
Yea not really worth it for these cranks I think. I think I'll try to replace the bearings in these cups and just use them for a while.
-
• #8067
Thank you!
-
• #8068
Cheers. 38T would probably work but I want something at the cheaper end so if I can find something on ebay or here then I'm not that fussy.

Which Surly is this? 135, 148 or boost?
-
• #8071
It's an old Surly Ogre with QR rear wheel so I presume (haha that's what fucked me to begin with) it's 135mm. Boost didn't come until after thru axles were on everything right? Please tell me there's not Boost QR?
-
• #8072
There’s definitely 142 qr.

Is it physically possible to remove a cleat bolt without destroying it? Every fucking time they get frozen into the base plate. What am I doing wrong? Loctite? Grease? Only ride in the dry? Buy new shoes every 3 months?
-
• #8074
Faark
Can I just grind 2.5mm off each side of the fucking BB shell?
-
• #8075
The middleburns you removed, what was wrong with them? They have a wide range of spiders, so you can fit as big a chainring as will fit the frame? (Which, I would not assume to be as big as 40t, the max single chainring size on my Bridge Club is quoted as 34t).
Shit keeps piling up doesn't it.
Hope cranks look to be an option... pretty spendy for an old Ogre though... might try and find some used ones... anything else to look at? I'd really prefer the most boring, common Shimano things so I guess I should look at Shimano XT cranks...
