What’s the story with the head tube mounted cable guides and lack of down tube bosses? 1984 is way before STI so assume it’s been modded sometime along it’s life. Can you shed light on that?

Seen other Eddy Merckx's and other later bikes the same way, not too sure. it was like that when i bought it.

Stunning frame,luckily it's not slightly bigger otherwise I'd probably have yet another project.
There are some stunning bargains to be had on rim brake steel frames just now.The cable guides are probably for bar-end shifters,they have been around a long time, I had a late thirties French touring bike with them.
They have been in and out of fashion ever since, including on "racing" bikes.Best of Luck with the sale.
May be worth trying on Retrobike if no luck here. -
