  • The caliper is made for a G (or J too if you wanna go finned) and as +edscoble pointed out, B fits but there's a much bigger parallel gap between the caliper and pads which causes rocking or juddering under heavy breaking.

    YMMV, B in a G caliper works ok, which is probably why you've not noticed it.

    Also, curious why are you using Elvedes pads? Stop gap (pun intended!) during the Shimano factory fire + COVID + Evergreen shortage?

    Can't find my G spare pads but this the compatibility list from the J04C.

    TBF they’re aren’t bad, lots of shop sell them due to The Cycle Division.

  • Not kicking them at all, I'm a big fan of Shimano as they work well enough and never felt wanting more (har har...).

  • Could also just be cacked up if it’s previously been used mostly at the top of the block and hasn’t been shifted down to the wee end much/at all.

    This is my guess too, can you push the parallelogram in by hand?

  • I think I said elsewhere... these are what came with the bike when I bought it. They stopped the bike so I've not had cause to care about them. I feel they're probably getting closer to the end of their life now though so I want to have a set or two of pads on hand as spares for longer rides.

    The whole system could do with a bit of a clean so I might pre-emptively change the pads but I now have two pairs of G04S pads that I can carry if/when they shit it during a ride.

  • Doesn't sound like it's sticked up with gunk, especially if it moves inward to big end freely.

    Detach cable completely, chain off and double check the H screw is backed out all the way. Also might be worth checking if theres nothing caught in behind / inside the mech itself (twig, small stone, etc). Would be easier with derailleur off bike

  • B pads are slightly smaller than Gs so they rattle and you can feel them move slightly when braking (at least the fronts, because gravity is against them. But if it’s meant take G buy G.

    You can also buy Js if you care about fins.

    (I’ve had Bs in my G-designed callipers for several months now and no firey death to report)

  • I've got Gs now. The whole bike needs a service - the cassette seems to have rattled loose during yesterday's ride and I'm changing the cranks so I reckon the whole drivetrain is going in the bin (or to someone who wants used 11-42 stuff). I'll probably clean rotors and swap pads too. Or I'll just run the whole lot further into the ground while ignoring all the noises :)

    No, different thread pitch so whilst the Mason thru axle will begin to engage, you're going to fuck the threads on the Specialized.

  • Ah, no I was thinking of the allen key tool thing and I've realised that the Sequoia uses 5mm not 6mm allen key so pretty sure the answer is "no". But, thanks for checking.

  • Found a Rohloff hg check in my toolbox. How do I use it to check cassette wear? I'm trying to decided between two equally fucked 11-42T cassettes :)

    I think both cassettes are pretty tired but the Shimano one appears to have a bit of life left. Can't test cogs over 21T though so if the granny gear is pretty worn I won't know until I try to use it under load with the new chain.

  • Since when did Shimano external BBs come with spacers? Is that just an MTB thing?

    I'm going to install without any and see what happens.

  • Depends on your BB shell 68/73 and if you run a chain guide, hence it's 1x drive side and 2x non drive.

    E.g. if its 73 with a chain guide, you'll run no spacers.

    I guess I just assumed the Ogre was 68mm coz it's not a true MTB but according to my fat thumbs it's 73mm.

    Not the first bit of bad news today, but yeah, 68mm shell only for "road" stuff.
