  • That Geoffrey Butler just looks right 👍

  • @Mungbean not sure if you mean the Tricross or the GB, either way the Tricross is some old thing that I think came off a Boardman? With the decals acetoned off. And the GB is a Cinelli A1.

@si_mon628 thanks, I am particularly happy with how it's come together this time!

  • J’adore that Geoff Butler. Also now I can’t decide whether to caustic soda my old cranks or rig up the elaborate (but scientific) de-anodising thing that @Hulsroy did a while ago.

  • Caustic soda would certainly be cheaper and easier, the adapter only needed a few seconds in a fairly dilute solution for the anodising to come off. I'd perhaps be careful if any parts of the crank are bonded together though, what are they?

  • Just looking now it’s pretty much the exact same Rotor 3D+s that Mads has. What are the chances? Nice of him to do the work for me anyway.

  • There's your answer then, time to start concocting some electric-y chemicals! It's definitely given me the appetite to strip and polish some more components..

  • Plenty of progress all round with projects this week. I've been wanting to swap the 1x9 Sram XO on the cycletruck to a triple for a while as well as change the black spoked rear wheel for a silver spoked one to match the front and I've finally collected all the pieces.

Tensioned up the rear wheel (Sunringlé Demon hub, Mavic Ex325 NOS rim, double butted spokes and brass nips) and swapped it for the Mavic Crossride that's done good service for a few years. Matchy matchy and the rim is a little wider too.

The frame was originally a single speed so had no gear routing, when I chopped it into a cycletruck I brazed in bosses on the underside of the down tube for a rear derailleur but it was still missing routing for a front one. I'd run out of gear cable stops so brazed a couple of different sized nuts together and stuck them on the underside of the down tube, slightly offset to avoid the central rear cable routing. The rest of it went together nicely, just a couple of niggles to sort now; the front derailleur is right at it's max limit trying to change up to the outer ring so I may need a slightly narrower bottom bracket, the spring tension is a bit weak in the rear derailleur too so that will need looking at and the shifters don't sit quite close enough to the brake levers because of an adjustment knob. Finally, the whole thing needs a very good clean, the guards tidying up, ideally a dyno hub, make a steel stem for it, and most importantly a full strip down to repaint before winter (perhaps spray can again but maybe a powder coat). Got a lot of love for this bike, it's used almost daily around town to avoid using the car and it's getting closer and closer to peak functionality.

    • 3x9 XT m735 with Ultegra 8spd bar end shifters (which handily have an extra click so work with 9spd) on adapters
    • White Industries triple crank set (42/32/22)
    • Avid Elixir 9 4-pot brakes, Hope discs

  • For a while now I've been thinking about getting a full suspension mountain bike, the Solaris has been my sole mtb for nearly six years now and as good as it is I'm starting to find the limits of a trail hardtail on some of the downhill tracks I'm riding (and my knees aren't getting any younger!).

After a demo ride a couple of weeks ago I've picked up a new Cotic Jeht with a shock, fork and headset. The rest of the build has been taken from the Solaris, which has all swapped straight over because Cotic use the same standards across their mtb range.

I had just enough time to build it up yesterday and fit in a couple of short runs in some pretty horrible slop before it got dark. First impressions are very good, it's capable and stable, like an improved version of the Solaris downhill. It's going to need a lot more fiddling with the huge number of adjustments on the shock and fork to get it completely sorted and I'm going to need some more aggressive, softer compound tyres for the winter. I can't bring myself to get rid of the Solaris so that will slowly get rebuilt over winter with a lighter, more xc focused build for bikepacking.

    • Large Cotic Jeht with Cane Creek DB Air Il
    • 150mm Lyrik Ultimate
    • XT 11spd with 12spd crank set
    • Magura Mt7
    • Stans Flow on Superstar V6 hubs
    • Fatbars/Trans X dropper/Deathgrips

  • You’re going to be (even more) impossible to catch on the trails now. Outstanding Shropshire hills trail bike IMO

  • Making time! Got the files and torch out again to make another stem, this time to go on the Solaris when it gets rebuilt. This one is 35mm length and there is a very small third tube between the bar and steerer tubes that ended up hidden by the fillets. Went for double M6 bolts on both the steerer and bar tube for maximum clamping security as it'll be ridden off-road. I'm tempted to try and get this one powder coated for a tougher finish rather than using a rattlecan as I have previously. Just waiting on the stainless bolts to arrive for it now.

I've also cut the tubes to make a high stack ~80mm stem for the cycletruck soon too.

  • Swapped the m950 XTR mech for a 9spd X0 one as it was a bit worn out and the colour scheme is a better match. I think this has had a Flite saddle and black pedals since I last posted a photo. Great fun for nipping around town.

  • I've got some purple pedals that have been on the cycletruck for a while but don't match the colour of anything else on there so I've stripped them down to service and de-anodize. A dunk in a caustic soda solution with the threads protected by grease has been effective. I'm not going to bother polishing them as they'll get bashed around and grubby on a bike used through winter around town.
