  • Like many of us, I sailed into Hayley’s consciousness online. We connected through being cyclists of lesser abilities amidst the norm of physical preparedness. Her selfless encouragement dawned a new gender reality upon me, too. She was always there at a reach of a message to offer support, voice an opinion or entertain with her wit.

I was proud to watch her little big movement on the forum grow more prominent. This was the incremental change, becoming progressive cycling, that I so strongly believed in. Being the Ron Lewis to her Dustin Klein during the blossom was an utmost privilege of mine.

She was famously against riding, yet I had my best rides with her. Waiting patiently quickly became riding slower to enjoy her presence. After a couple of endeavours I felt I couldn’t get enough of her friendship, only to learn to accept her boundaries. She predominantly existed indoors, which was perfectly valid.

We didn’t always agree on things, especially with politics. Still, even at my most toxic she remained compassionate, which ultimately helped me forward with my demons. The unassuming energy she radiated gathered people together, be it to share a fleeting moment or become friends for life. Her home time often felt early, but I now realise she just gave us more in less time.

You shall ride in our minds forever Hayley
