I think the key is the mum wasn’t cool with it. And what better way, to make sure your daughter doesn’t end up with someone you don’t like, than getting that someone locked up in a Dubai nick.

Might have already been mentioned but I read it as being they were both on separate holidays with their respective parents, they met out there and started a relationship. The 17 year old and her family then came back to the UK and her mam saw texts and stuff so then reported it whilst the 18 year old and his family were still out there which is where things are at now.

With the girls parents, who would've known and been cool with the relationship, and presumably meant the lad would've been even less likely to be checking local age of consent laws. It is a bit mad and certainly different to him heading over by himself at 18 and bonking a 17 year old local.
