  • California will be uninhabitable soon.

    Water shortage - check
    Wild fires - check
Wild fires in December - check

  • There've already been climate refugees from parts of northern california. The lengthening of the fire season means the air has too many soot particles for most of the year. https://emeraldreview.com/2024/01/climate-migration-in-california/

UK 18yr old man has relationship with UK 17yr old girl while in Dubai (where age of consent is 18).

Girl's mum finds out when they get back to the UK, takes umbrage, reports it to Dubai police and the man is detained (still).

Is it me, or does it feel unnecessarily spiteful to go to Dubai police with this a. knowing that no laws were broken according to UK legislation; and b. reporting someone for a sex offence in Dubai will only end in a handful of bad ways.

    Maybe I'm too liberal... !?

  • Absurd.

Dubai is really on my list of places to never visit.

  • Same. When I practice gratitude, it's part of my mantra that I am not in Dubai. Hellish laws, poor Human Rights record, wall to wall with influencer types.

Anyway, I digress... I can't help thinking there was probably a little bit (a lot?) of "I'll show him!" by the obviously disgruntled mum.

  • The mum needs to be exposed and doorstepped by the Mail.

  • I would be very interested in hearing the mother's point of view, and for her to explain her actions without mentioning the colour of the lad's skin.

  • Exactly my thoughts.

  • The government should have some sort of travel advice for tourists warning about this kind of thing...

If a person aged 18 or over has a sexual relationship with a person aged 17 or under, they will be prosecuted for having a sexual relationship with a minor.

Perhaps we need a 'are you a moron test' before allowing people to board a flight out of the UK?

  • My take is that it was unnecessary for the mum to report it, given the facts we have.

  • I think that is a different issue. The reporting mum is a bit of a dick by my standards but I also have limited sympathy for people that get caught breaking laws that some fairly basic research would have alerted them to.

The mum was wrong to report him but he was also wrong to sleep with a minor in the UAE.

  • lol - how many 18 year old boys do you know that would think about the legal implications of their actions when they are being offered a chance of sex?

  • Ignorance is not a defence though. 🤷

  • We’re on the same page.

This lad needed telling “look you fucked up back there, just be careful in future eh” and nothing more.

  • I also have limited sympathy for people that get caught breaking laws that some fairly basic research would have alerted them to.

So you've limited sympathy for people who break laws in all instances?

  • It’s unlikely that Florida Man and his nuclear family of 10 will look to resettle in the UK unless things get really, really bad in the US, but I expect to see an uptick in rage heart attacks among a certain British demographic if they do start arriving en masse.

  • but he was also wrong to sleep with a minor in the UAE.

This is such a shit take, they're two kids from the UK who are basically the same age and got it on whilst on holiday.

  • With the girls parents, who would've known and been cool with the relationship, and presumably meant the lad would've been even less likely to be checking local age of consent laws. It is a bit mad and certainly different to him heading over by himself at 18 and bonking a 17 year old local.

  • I think the key is the mum wasn’t cool with it. And what better way, to make sure your daughter doesn’t end up with someone you don’t like, than getting that someone locked up in a Dubai nick.

  • I blame the parents. Mostly for taking them to Dubai.

  • If you can't do the time don't do the crime is the clichĂ©.

  • Not only…

You and many like you were intent on spreading a hateful message of violence and racism

    But also…

Fishlock, whose shirt bore the name Bellingham and the number 10 on the back

  • Sorry, the guy's parents, but they were with some parents despite being old enough to go by themselves anyway and have presumably been shagging since they were both 17.
