The old iPad mini that I was using as a shot timer for the Micra has corked it, and using my phone is annoying - what automatically triggered shot timer systems are people using, and would they recommend them?

What about one of these? Need to order one myself.

That certainly looks worth a go - thanks!

Why do you not use the one on your scales? The Timemore black mirror/Acaia definitely have auto timers.

I normally just count out loud.

I can’t decide which grinder to get Eureka 65 or Rocket Faustino
The Eureka looks sick, all white digital display and a small hopper. 65mm burrs.
The rocket is black, neat and tidy. 50mm burrs

Why not one of the smaller Eureka Mignons?
I’m biased of course. -

Because they won't trigger until the liquid hits (I believe, I have a pair of scales that cost me $6 from the local cooking equipment place) and I have a pre-infusion set that floods the puck with line pressure water before the pump goes on, which I want to include.

I really want an on demand grinder and a 65 has come up at a reasonable price. But the rocket is the same price

Fair enough. I generally find it less faff to hit the timer manually after I start preinfusion rather than install something on the machine and mess around with wiring, but do admit that I often forget to hit stop once the shot is done..

I just want the paddle going across to start the timer, and the paddle going back to stop it.

Made a bit of progress on my europiccola refresh/tart up
New element and pstat pipe chucked on and some wiring put together, fired up and got up to pressure, pstat cycles nicely.
Then I found out the base was loose (not sure how, its been sat in the garage for the best part of a year) I fitted the lock ring last year when I first built it.
This time I'm going bigger and better and using a breaker bar and a workmate to get some leverage into it so it should stay put this time round!
Then I can tidy up the wiring, fit the new wooden handles and hopefully pull some shots.
I should probably fit a resettable thermal fuse as well.

Illustrating my ignorance here, but I thought that most of the Mignon line were on demand, except for the Zeros?

This has been a constantly occurring thing for me, can only assume it's the boiler spacer/gasket (https://espressocare.com/products/boiler-spacer-europiccola), that's compressed over time and therefore loosened a bit.
I've not been great about re-tightening it, and I can turn the boiler using the lever pretty easily. But it's not a leak-risk so I tend not to bother. Not helped by the process of tightening the boiler flange being a pain. If I had a proper little workshop I'd absolutely make one of those little grouphead mounts for a vice and use that. But alas that's not the case.
Though this sort of thing seems like overkill: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oKu0qmFurrA

I always keep a piece of scaffolding in the garage for tasks just like this.
-
• #28392
They probably are. But I’m not getting a Mignon. I’ve got a choice of a rocket Fausto or a eureka 65.
I’ve got £200 to blow on a grinder, brand new £200 doesn’t go very far.

I think that's the legendary Bruce Pappas! Have watched a few of his videos.
I have an electric impact hammer tool thingy but it's on its last legs, and it flings the oil filter wrench so fast it occasionally slips off, so breaker bar it is!!

• #28394
I've the rocket, grind is generally decent but the touch screen only works when totally dry, which isn't always ideal when making something with hot water...
-
• #28395
Gotcha, was comparing new prices.
-
• #28397
How are your hands anything but dry when making coffee?
-
• #28398
And £200 is a stretch. Could get a df54 for not much more. Weighing coffee is long though

• #28399
All it needs now is go faster stripes.
