Statins can be a bastard. GPs dole them out like smarties because they are cheap and effective. But if you are intolerant (like me and a surprisingly large proportion of the population) be prepared for some misery until your Doc accepts that maybe they aren’t for you. Bastards tried three flavours on me before accepting that maybe muscle pain gut ache and malaise I was reporting might be side effects of bloody medication they’d prescribed. Luckily no muscle loss which can be a thing - they can literally melt and clog organs! On something else now which seems OK, which is good because apparently I’m genetically predisposed to have mad cholesterol despite healthy diet, tons of exercise etc.

Not trying to come across as a grumpy shit bag, I did mention side effects. Didn't mention what the side effects were ;)
Now to sound knowledgeable, there are people who are intolerant, like you, and you are lucky as have heard of diabetics having to take two or three other medications to cover the intolerance. Such as stomache and toilet issues which are exaggerated when taking Metformin.
If you are predisposed then not much you can do. Maybe read the book I mentioned the cholesterol myth one. I recommend getting it from a library as it is an interesting read but sort of doesn't get people are different and what works for one don't work for the other. Some worked for me, and I stopped taking simvastatin as last thing at night I can't be fucked to brush my teeth never mind taking one of the 8 tablets I take a day.
Statins, if you don't have the side effects ;) Allegedly being on statins after 40/50 is supposed to be a good thing. But can't remember why. All diabetics are supposed to be on statins but no idea if that is true.
An interesting book I read a while back https://www.amazon.co.uk/Great-Cholesterol-Revised-Expanded-Disease/dp/1592339336 You could experiment on yourself and see what happens.
EDIT: By experiment on yourself I mean that people are very different so what may work for one many not work for others. So experiment to find out what works for you.
