Keep forgetting about language transfer. I am still slogging away at Duolingo and was able to make some basic conversation last week in Lanzarote. I really need to push it on a bit though and may go back to language transfer.

I learn by doing, not by reading textbooks. So YouTube is good. I learnt Catalan by doing 1 on 1 conversations everyday on italki, but I can't afford to do that now. I find Duolingo etc just crap, slow and dull, while teaching you stuff you'll never need.

The Paul noble course was refreshing, just straight in to the good basics, mostly.

I did easy Catalan and they are good stuff, so easy Spanish is an idea. I checked out dreaming Spanish and the website is a nice system.

Having just done an hour this is good thanks, works for me in how I learn and skips the bullshit basics for idiots, nor concerns itself with detailed grammar.

Yes Catalan and Spanish are very similar, but still different. I can understand a lot of Spanish now, but can't speak much so I need to cross that bridge. Then I need to do some grammar and some proper exams I think.

Impressed that you learned Catalan first. If I had fully appreciated how many people speak Valencian, here where I live, I would have learned that first, instead of castellano.

I didn't realise Valencia was that much spoken, though I know they're proud. Actually it's meant to me similar to catalan I believe.

I live in a Catalan stronghold so it's the daily language, learning it opened doors for me. Plus at school here, in our town, everything is taught in catalan and Spanish is taught as a class as a second language! With speaking french it made sense as french and Catalan are close. Ultimately, people are very happy to practice and help a stranger learning Catalan so it made it easier. But now, I can't leave Catalunya or get a proper job and where but locally so I need to learn Spanish.

It all would have been a lot easier if my partner was Spanish or Catalan! Then I could speak in just that language!

The whole Valencian / Catalan / Castellano / Español thing is fascinating to me. We live in a Valencian stronghold, but didn't realise this when we moved here - friends, neighbours, their young kids, all speak valencian as a first language. A lot of people are happy for it to be a dialect of Catalan, others will argue vehemently that it's the opposite way around. Some of our older "veins" barely speak castellano. And god forbid you call it Español!!

Yes it's fascinating but also a pain in the arse!

I did one year of Spanish in uni and failed miserably. After living a few seasons in Ibiza and Mallorca I picked up the local dialects and have Catalan and Basque in-laws. Found Catalan quite easy to pick up and would consider myself pretty close to fluent in Spanish albeit with some very peculiar accents and grammatical quirks. I’d say learning them simultaneously helped me.

I always assumed you had to be able to speak Spanish to live and work in spain. I found out I was wrong 20 years too late haha.

I've been looking for work but finding it difficult to find something that doesn't need at least some Spanish, but a lot was business Spanish.
