123, 456 - an Inbred-adjacent utility bike.

  • Since moving out of London to the West Country, I have realised that trying to ride a fixed Pre Cursa as my utility beater in a city full of hills is not at all practical.

I had an old jump bike with tough old 26“ Azonic DH rims on blue Hope hubs and other bits stripped off my old Kona, so decided to build a utility MTB around them. I had been hoping to get an Inbred, but then this rather nice On-One 456 popped up with matchy blue decals so I ended up with something Inbred-adjacent. Other parts bin/bits off here were slowly acquired alongside a cheap steel fork off AliExpress and some Stridsland-approved BoozeLights and I have finally dropped it off at the LBS to be assembled today (I really cba to try bodging a headset press at home etc).

Plan is to add on my Pelago Commuter front rack and some mudguards, and then go and have some fun!

This build will be so fun for Ashton Court laps though.

  • Very nice.
When I first got the pre cursa dolan sent it built up as a grass track bike with cross tires for some reason - kinda tempted to hang on to it and revert it back to its original form for silly thrashing at some point.

  • Oh, that sounds exciting! What is the difference between the inbred and a 456?

  • Think the 456 is designed to be a bit slacker and longer around longer travel forks

  • Slow progress - now just needs a chain, gears set up, rack and stem height/saddle position tweaking.
Longer term, want to get some mud guards on. Any recommendations for sturdy guards? Bonus if they’ve got integrated pannier rails on the back.

  • Seem to remember the 456 name meant 4,5 or 6 inches of fork travel. One of the original hardcore hardtails when 100mm travel was standard.

Your rigid forks look a bit shorter so that might unslacken it a bit

  • Yeah, seeing them (26” rigid forks) on there looks like some 29er forks may have been more fitting to correct the geo. Oh well - an upgrade for down the line.

  • Looks awesome fun and the steeper head angle might be better for a town bike

  • Looks good, just realised that's the new home my old cranks and chainring went to! Appropriately enough as their previous life was also on an On One 😁

  • Excellent !

Steady progress, including rack and bell on. Have also put on a big 11-40 cassette on which the LBS suggested my mech should take, but it fouls on the biggest ring. Would a mech hanger extender be my friend here?

  • That derailleur easily handles 11-40. Wack a chain in and then wind the b screw in.

  • Looks like it needs the higher a-c fork no?
Nifty rack bodging with the mounts on the inside of the dropouts!
Also, yeah, just screw that mf b-screw right in.

  • Yes - naively got 26in fork without thinking about sus correction as didn’t want massive gap between wheel and crown. Will have to see how it rides I guess. Also cheers for the B screw tips, derailleur all sorted

  • Now built up - awaiting a few tweaks. Guards are Stridsland-correct Curana 26in guards. Thanks @t0-ster for all your advice with this build.
    Updates I’m thinking about:

    • slightly longer 25.4mm stem, or new 31.8 stem and wider bars
    • Lay-backs seatpost
    • Home-made under-seat holder for the Abus lock
    • Some sort of of mount for rechargeable light on the rack

If anyone has any suggestions/swaps/bits for sale that would fit the above please let me know!

  • Ps thanks for the advice about b-screw. Drivetrain all sorted.

  • Now approaching completion of what initially envisioned for this bike - pretty chuffed with how it’s turned out and have enjoyed bodging various mounts for things other than their intended uses (the under-saddle bottle mount for the lock, and the rear-rack light mount p-clipped on to my Pelago). Other little bits include some cheap Pinnacle ergon knock-offs and a top-cap phone mount. Thanks also to @pdlouche for the bag mods - for now going to run my trusty timbuk2 mini-messenger as a rack-top bag that lies flat enough for me to strap bigger stuff over the top of it. Can add some better pics of the mods if anyone is interested - it’s basically a strip of webbing that hooks over the back of the rack, and the bag is then tensioned forwards and held in place by a single mini voile strap. Super secure but equally very quick to remove if needed. Final few bits I’d like to add are some moto/cruiser style bars and probably some of the restrap rack straps in place of the Voile one I have currently

  • Does it do the thing as anticipated? Hopefully mods met the brief.

  • Absolutely - it’s spot on. I’m coming up with some ideas about a lighter weight strap to replace the current shoulder strap made out of the same webbing that I can store in the bag without taking up as much space - will message you if/when I want to proceed. Should be a pretty simple thing to run up hopefully. Thanks again dude 👌

  • Awesome! Great build
