• I usually get my hair done at the London School of Barbering but they don't have any bookings available until next Friday and I'm overdue a cut. All I want is a #1 all over, nothing fancy, so really don't want to be paying £12 or whatever for it.

Recommendations of where I could get this done for £5-6 would be gratefully received. I work in Wapping and live in Herne Hill but can get anywhere by bike more or less.

Before anyone suggests it, I'm not cutting it myself!

  • There is a cheap mens hair dresser very near to Shadwell station , news grace gents hair style London , in watney street. I think it's 6/7 quid.

  • perfect cheers guv

  • There's also a place diagonally opposite the Old Blue Last, beside Itsu, where there's a guy shouting 'Free haircuts' every lunchtime. Apart from that, all I can tell you is that he doesn't exude a Sweeney Todd vibe.

  • Not that central, but the Barber Box on Blackstock Road for £7 is good. Turkish barbers who do a good job.

  • Plus you can grab some quality Nanns when you're done.

  • Clippers and a pal is always a good option.
When I used to shave my head, a set of clippers cost £20, sit outside and the wife used to do it.
I could do it myself but the back got a little awkward.

  • Bit on the nose branding clippers as "Balding".

  • Constantine 43 Lee High Rd, Lewisham, London SE13 5FH
    £5

  • Probably the wrong place to ask, but i want a slightly better haircut than my local barber offers. Where should i go in London (central or Hackney / Islington area)?

@hugo7 recommended somewhere on a thread a while back

  • I’ve been going to Martin James on Hackney Road for years now. Top guy. £14

  • For a free hair cut there are a couple of barber schools near turnpike lane.

Tho you will get the one haircut all the people that go there get. It will also take a long time.

  • Thanks

  • I assume it is a walk in not appointment situation?

  • Yeah. Opening hours are 10-6 Tue, Thu, Fri & 10-13 Sat

To be taken with a pinch of salt, don't turn up at 10am sharp.

  • I always used to go to ESHK when I realised Taylor Taylor was more than I could afford.

Absolutely no idea what they cost now though as it was a depressingly long time ago.

I stopped going when I had a kid as it was too far from my office and I wasn't able to go after work.

Use of "Barbican" as a location would make an estate agent blush. It's a bit down from the back of City Uni on Goswell Rd.

The Shoreditch one is very handily near that cycle route that runs parallel to New North Rd. and then intersects Old Street. I mainly went to that one in the end because it was easier to cycle to.

  • I go to barberette in hackney downs. Nice but pricey.

I'm still not quite on board with the idea my haircuts now cost about 70p a day when they were free (DIY or friends/family) until a few years ago.

  • my haircuts now cost about 70p a day when they were free (DIY or friends/family) until a few years ago.

That'll teach you to alienate all your friends and family.

  • I go to my pal Ben here: https://www.treatwell.co.uk/place/rebel-barbers-broadgate/. Not the cheapest but does a great haircut and decent chat. He's also a cyclist so you'll always have something to talk about.

If you want really cheap, I used to go to Saf's on Lower Clapton Road. I've not been since about 2019 but it was a tenner then. However, it's worth noting the quality of your haircut will vary, which is why I switched. But I guess you can't really complain for a tenner!

  • Like a muppet, I ignored all this advice and impulsively went to somewhere called the Bearded Barber just south of Newington Green, without even reading the reviews. It was the single worst haircut I have ever had. The guy used a comb once and cut my hair dry. Not convinced he had ever cut hair before. I did not pay.

Fortunately, I was left with enough hair to get it corrected, and went to Ted's Grooming Room in Borough Market. Awful name, decent haircut. £45 (inc tip).

  • The difference between a good hair cut and a bad hair cut is about 10 days.

  • True. I've started getting @branwen to do the #1 maintenance shave to space out the actual cut a bit longer, which seems to be a good compromise

  • Best hairdresser I've ever been to is down your way. 118 Railton Rd. Not the cheapest but I only go once a year. The shagginess of it requires lots of her time so I feel guilty for undermining her business model. £55 or 60 total. She's a proper craftsperson. Called Eva. One chair.
