  • Oh I’ve cycled past that (Here). The front is a little odd having basically no windows. The rest is lovely though.

  • It’s right behind us, only thing I’m not sure about is the black marble by the front door but it fits in well and far better looking than a grey on grey with land rover evoke sat on an acre of paving outside.
Stupidly decided to read the comments on the BBC website about it “it looks like a 60’s council house” well the roofline perfectly matches the adjacent Wates built homes from the early 60’s and what does your shitbox home look like?
Think most neighbours here love it as there was only compliments on the residents WhatsApp group.

  • multiple wood burning stoves in dense urban area, FFS. Were UFH or (gasp) radiators a bit gauche?

  • Was surprised to see that, in a modern efficient house like that are they even needed?

I grassed to the council on one of the big detached houses I can see out the window as they were burning damp unseasoned logs through most of the winter, could smell it out in the street and when i lived up the road you couldn’t leave the bathroom window open when they using their open fire/log burner as the smoke smell came in the flat.

They had a letter and a visit as it’s a designated smoke control area round here.

  • good, well done! There's someone near me doing that but I haven't been able to detect which chimney it's coming from.

in a modern efficient house like that are they even needed?

The answer is usually no, but they are included for the aesthetic/lifestyle reasons.

  • Was easy for me to spot as huge plumes of grey smoke on consecutive days.

  • Controversial but I think you should leave it well alone unless you can get it done in leather.

    Fabric looses the luxury element.

  • Saw that place on Open house day as I'm fairly local, looks great IRL and does fit nicely on that street (which I'd like to live on). I like the material palette, but also can't see why you'd have multiple fires you shouldn't be using, guess Architects gonna Architect.

  • i have a theory that wood stoves are the UK equivalent to white collar workers owning huge trucks in the US - an attempt to claim some sort of rustic/manly credentials

  • Maybe, perhaps they just look good in photos, and that house was destined to be photographed a lot. They are a sort of 'homeliness/comfort' signifier, maybe it offsets the exposed concrete and sharp edges, at least the house generally looks like someone lives there rather than the high end staged TMH aesthetic ("please remove televisions for the photographs").

  • you're definitely right on the homeliness stuff. I feel that when I smell the smoke/feel the warmth, even though I know intellectually how bad they are from a health perspective.

  • Took the words out of my mouth. Why the fuck would you choose to do this? It's 2K24 ffs.

There's an ancient couple constantly burning wet wood in their house at the end of our road, stinking up the place and aggravating my daughter's asthma. It's beyond annoying, several neighbours have grassed them up to the council, but I can kind of understand their position as they're old, have "been doing it our entire lives", and probably don't know any better. An architect consciously specifying multiple burners in a built-up area? Get fucked, you selfish muppet.

    Cute house tho still.

  • I'm no health and safety consultant, but is that wood behind the stove a hazard? Also, in NL they advertise (in cinemas even) about the effect of those things on your lungs. I like a lttle fire every now and then, but on a daily basis fuck no.

Edit: Only just reading the above. Seems I'm not alone on this one. Perhaps the architect is a boomer.

  • while we're having a good moan, i did also roll my eyes at the idea of having hot stoves with absolutely no physical barrier in a house with 'growing kids'.

That's probably more reflective of the chaotic energy of my kids being 5 and 7 but still.

  • Also, has anyone else clocked how they've photoshopped out all the wood burner chimneys in the Dezeen photos? They're visible in Google Streetview.

And they've only gone and bunged a built-in fire pit into the patio as well...

  • Well, at some point we all get pur fingers burnt.

  • Prob not. We have a similar stove (Morsø 1512) and we need 5cm to the wooden wall behind it

  • Do you mean a Morso 1412, requiring 100mm to the combustible materials behind?

  • Yeah. Got most of it wrong, but hey, not too far off! 🙃

  • I finally visited inside Battersea Power Station last weekend, the retained elements of the A station (1930s) and B station (1950s) were handled rather well by Wilkinson Eyre.

Shame about the residential schemes around it today, here is A station before the expansion

  • Turned the ratty IKEA rug 90 degrees and pushed it up to the door. Best cost / benefit ratio since cleaning the windows

  • 'growing kids'

Lazy idioms like this mildly annoy me. All kids are growing, it’s what they do.

  • Is finishing painting behind the radiator next on the list ;-)

  • Re: house of the year

I imagine the furnaces/stoves were put it to add some warmth (visually not physically lol), the spaces are quite cold - unsure why they went with an natural(unfinished) pine or plywood, with matching floor. Even a light stain/varnish would significantly improve warmth/ambiance. I’m glad they didn’t go down the polished concrete route and made an attempt to keep in line with modernist / Dulwich estate interior.

I also cycle past it regularly and first time I saw it thought it was a bit selling sunset - particularly the upper central window and concrete/marble facade

  • If anyone knows where I can get pink tiles suitable for use for a fireplace and hearth please let me know cause I can't bloody find any. These guys used to do them but they don't have any of the pink glaze left apparently.
