  • Head torches seem to be popular with runners so figure this might be the place to ask for a recommendation a usb rechargeable one.

Lots of them, Petzl and Black Diamond in particular appear to be ‘dual fuel’ where they can run off double or triple As or a rechargeable battery which you have to buy separately, I just want a built in rechargeable battery…unless there’s a particular reason to not do this?

Edit: It’s really for seeing while camping/out doing photography at night etc that I want it so don’t think it needs to be particularly bright, red light option would be good.

  • Alpkit quark is meant to be very good, not tried it myself

  • Having done a bunch of research, this is what I decided on. Haven’t tried it yet, as it is my Xmas present.

  • A lot will be 'dual fuel' and think this is due to being used for endurance/ultra events.
Can carry spare battery's and keep going, once the rechargeable one has run down.

  • The decathlon head torches are pretty cheap and decent.

    Petzl Bindi

  • After the Abingdon marathon, I kind of ended up in another build phase and have been doing more hill/speed work in the weeks since. I’d been so careful in the build to that race that I basically just did a load of zone 2 and just enough speed to be comfortable pushing for sub 3 but was very nervous of injury, so have thrown caution to the wind slightly and went out on a solo time trial this morning to see what it’s done.

  • That's awesome, sub 2h50/2h45 gotta be on next year yeah?

  • Maybe - depends on motivation but shaving a minute and 50 seconds off would be doable, but it’s just a never ending cycle of improving times.

  • Yeah, as @SideshowBob said the hybrid ones are more for the Ultra crowd - if you don't need to be able to run it from AA or AAA batteries then just get a USB-rechargeable one, they're smaller / lighter.

I can still very much recommend the NiteCore NU25 / NU20 Classic.
Very comfortable (you forget it's there), and lights are great - 4 steps / intensities, (more natural) CRI light (which is great for reading for example), plus red light.

  • Cheers all for the recommendations.

It seemed strange to me that headteacher have gone this replaceable battery route when bike lights are generally just a big built in battery but I goes a lot of it is for weight, better to carry a lot of the weight of the battery in a pocket/pack than on your head.

  • +1 for Nitecore. Been using one for a couple of years for winter night runs/commutes.

  • I'd also support votes for Nitecore, I have 2 of their tiny keyring torches which I made elastic loops to use them as thumb carry spotlights, I think I posted about it in this thread all those years back. They're still great.

  • Holy shit that’s amazing! Massive salute. How the hell do you keep that pace for so long?

I’ve been mixing pace and distance recently and actually looking forward to going out.
Will break this one soon hopefully.

  • that's impressive. mostly that you've got the bloody-mindedness to put in a race pace marathon effort solo on a random weekend

I have a London spot and this is the sort of time I should really have an eye on. the long tempo runs are going to be a shock to the system after not racing longer than a half in a loooooong time

  • I have spent the last few months targeting sub 20 5km with the goal of going out and running it the day before my 40th. Managed to mess up by not actually booking the Battersea 5k to do it and was really quite ill but thought i had to have a go.

  • Yeah boiiiii. Congrats on that. How did it feel?

  • Haha. It hurt! I was then ill for three days in bed so im looking forward to having another crack in a few weeks when not ill

  • Damn that sucks. Heal up and hopefully come back even stronger.
Gonna rest up for a couple days then give it another crack on the weekend. Well happy for you on cracking that

  • Well done! It's such a good barrier to break!

Oh and happy birthday for tomorrow 😁

I think I'm finally coming out of the other side of 5 months of Runner's Knee. It's crazy how long this is taking to heal, but after a shit summer spent mostly in the gym, I am finally out doing gentle 5k plods. It's not the cardio or strength that I'm struggling with now, but the constant anxiety during each run, each step even, that my knee is going to go pop again and that'll be it for another 5 months 😕 I suppose I'll just keep at the 5k twice-weekly runs until my head gets over it.

  • Congrats - what we all dream of.

  • Brilliant. I'm a decade older than you and this is my goal in the spring.

  • thanks all. My goal for next year is sub 40min 10k (#Sub40while40)
I have a feeling it is a significant step up

  • Bloody hell! how many laps of VP was that and then an out and back? or a couple loops of the whole thing?

  • I found that as lots of people are running spring marathons in the UK, training from now until then can get you a really good base for a 10k. I'd also suggest a running club helps for this and unless you are very good at being consistent with the high intensity sessions.

I'm hoping I'm finally over the itband niggle which has plagued me this year - just in time to begin a training block for an ultra marathon next May
