Maybe, perhaps they just look good in photos, and that house was destined to be photographed a lot. They are a sort of 'homeliness/comfort' signifier, maybe it offsets the exposed concrete and sharp edges, at least the house generally looks like someone lives there rather than the high end staged TMH aesthetic ("please remove televisions for the photographs").
you're definitely right on the homeliness stuff. I feel that when I smell the smoke/feel the warmth, even though I know intellectually how bad they are from a health perspective.
