Is the answer always latest m chip when considering future proofing apple laptops? I like to hold onto them as long as possible, use case is browsing, photos, music.
You could probably buy an M3 with more ram and have an equally long shelf life vs M4 with less ram.
With your use cases, you shouldn't have any issues with either for a very, very long time.
