These braided pachira aquatica are very susceptible to root rot, because they have big fleshy bases and it's three or four plants grown right next to each other and twisted around.
Remove from pot and wash all the soil off. If any of the roots are rotting, then you need to remove that plant, it can't be fixed. If you are only removing one of them, you might be able to carefully cut it out and the braided effect might not look too weird after.
Replace compost with a very free draining mix. They store water in their big fleshy bases anyway so don't need a very moist soil.
On mine I got rid of all but one plant, cut it quite low and let it grow back in a normal non braided shape. But if you want to keep it braided you definitely need to never, ever over water.
This is a (rare) example of one sold non-braided, if you do need to remove some bits, debraid and prune, you could end up with one or more like this:

Any advice for this? Dropping its leaves and generally looking very unhappy. Thought maybe we’d overwatered as it stayed damp for a while when we stopped, soil still doesn’t feel totally dry. It has some new leaves but they haven’t got any bigger in months. House can get quite cold, could it be that?
