  • any recommendations for rear ss disc hubs?
or is it 'fine' to just use an hg cassette rear wheel with a single speed kit like a gusset 1-er?

  • As far as I can tell, absolutely fine. Think about the forces acting across the HG body compared to when it's holding a cassette - arguably SS puts less strain on the HG body than gears as the force only stays in one plane...but I'm definitely not a mechanical engineer and I'm sure that something something wheel stiffness with a wider-dished SS-specific hub.

Another plus of a conversion kit is that you can fine tune chainline.

  • If the freehub body is aluminium, you might want to get a fatfoot/wide base cog - but on a steel freehub body is no issue.

  • For me, I think the biggest theoretical advantage is the hub flanges can be further apart, making for a stronger wheel. Given the huge numbers of folk riding round on multi-speed freehubs without their wheels exploding into fiery death, I'm not sure it's a deal-breaker.

  • thanks all. i have used a gusset single speed kit previously and i'm still alive.
i need to replace a wheel on my singlespeed charge plug, and it's pretty much impossible to find a prebuilt 700c ss disc wheel (unless someone can give me any pointers?)
    it's a 135mm spaced 10mm bolt through, but i'm fairly sure it'll be ok with a 9mm QR hub?
the chain tension is dealt with by an EBB so the dropout position is fixed.

and trisports are banging out shimano rear disc wheels for £25 on ebay for black friday...
