  • It’s 50% of the sound

  • You're absolutely right, these strings are ancient

  • Bass into a Rat pedal (or similar distortion with a low pass filter) and the highs rolled off, distortion up so it catches the peaks. If you've got an amp, great, use it, but a decent amp sim is fine too - the free UAD SVT is great. Chuck it into a slow squashy LA2A type compressor for consistency, then out to a pultec style EQ with the bass boosted (and if it's sounding boomy, the alternative bass attenuated on the other EQ). You might also need to boost the mids to get the clunk good and prominent. For that sound I'd agree with others, new strings are a big part of it.

  • Nice, thanks. I've got some tape wound Roto 88 on the way. It's a Jack Casady Epiphone bass so very good at plonk, will have to work a bit for growl.

  • Fun weekend playing lots of nice guitars. My favourites were this Gretsch Double anniversary from ‘67, and a lovely ‘90s J-50 that I did some recording with. I need a J-50 in my life.

  • That Bronco was fun too. It’s a ‘63 I think and was minty!

Also rocked this 90s custom shop LP (thru a Kemper!) which was surprisingly fun!

  • Same bassline played on Bass VI is in the right growly territory!

  • Bronco is lovely. Used to be able to pick up those obscure student fenders dirt cheap in the early 00s. I foolishly traded a musicmaster and a duo-sonic for a shitbox car. Big mistake.

  • Wolverhampton? Me too - what a gig!

  • Bristol. But yeah it was incredible.

  • I know right?! He paid 2k Eu for it. '63, all original parts, original finish and original case with original shop invoice. I was surprised that it seemed pretty affordable and way cheaper than stuff goes for on reverb here. I wasn't sure if that is a UK/Germany thing but actually I think it's more the face-to-face "good customer" thing. There's a '68 CBS era one on reverb right now for £3k. Considering his is pre-CBS... just goes to show if you're in the market for this stuff, it's worth building a relationship with a proper delaer. Sadly I don't have the disposable income (or tax-deductable situation) to be regularly shoping for vintage gear in person so that's not really an option.

Still - I get to live vicariously and play and record with this stuff for FREE so I definitely not complianing.

Am just swapping the neck over on my Tele. Gonna get it set-up and twangin' this evening.

  • There's a lot of cheap US stuff in Germany through isn't there, it's the best place in Europe to pick up American cars and stuff like that.

  • 14yr old nephew is learning g guitar and wants an fx pedal for Christmas. He’s already got a fuzz/distortion pedal so thinking of getting him a chorus or delay but what are hive mind recommendations? Cheap and cheerful is preferred so long as it keeps him playing.

  • Mooer mini pedals options are pretty well priced, and I've been using their MPO1 for ages without issue

  • Looks decent and Anderson’s have a Black Friday sale on these so thanks!

  • First group session in a long while yesterday. I'm old now and want to protect my ears. I have a pair of loop quiet (27dB reduction) - Is that overkill?

  • Can’t comment on specifics but hearing protection is must for me now. I went without at a loud session earlier this year and think I did some permanent damage. Er on the side of caution I’d say. You can always take them out of not needed.

  • Ha. Gross. Fake Gibsons are the Trumpiest.

  • How is the new Tele neck?
I might also have to sort a transplant as this feels like it's getting worse. Maybe my flat is too humid?

  • ACS Custom all day, no such thing as overkill for hearing protection (I have learned too late)

  • I’ve started bedroom recording again and my tinnitus is a lot worse since so looking to use desk monitors instead of headphones and also earplugs for gigs etc. I’ve had tinnitus for a couple of years now but it’s only now it’s starting to bother me due to it increasing recently. Definitely take steps to avoid it if you can.
