  • Be careful there aren’t any damp / moisture issues that could cause structural damage. Particularly in hidden areas.

  • I have some loop pile carpet in the box room/office and moving a chair around makes it bobble. I ended up putting a mat down.

  • Guarantees will only be for manufacturers defects so not really worth anything. You can just reject on install. Though not sure on comeback if you've bought direct and had fitted yourself.

Last few times I've needed carpet I've just measured up the room for m² and gone to carpetright or tapi and bought within my budget. They arrange fitting so that's easy, usually about £50 a room.

Last time they fucked up and cut my bigger room carpet to fit the smaller room so they had to reorder. Thankfully that was all on them as I was buying a one stop solution not getting a fitter to install a carpet id bought

  • A timber frame house could be as rotten as an old pear. You need to get the mother of all surveys done on it and a lender who deals with non standard stuff

  • Whatever you do, make sure it's not wool. We have found it impossible to get rid of moths.

A nice rubbery layer underneath will make any cheap carpet feel so much nicer.

For office bits, there's a transparent hard mat you can put over carpet for office chairs to roll on.

  • I hope you get to the bottom of it Dr. Hunyak.

  • This is an interesting case. Where does a buyer’s due diligence come into play, when something like this happens?

  • moths "ruined their wine". interesting.

  • Following on from my last post on solicitor recommendations, anyone has any recommendations for firms to do a condition survey (1930s 3 bed semi in SE6).

  • Whatever you do, make sure it's not wool. We have found it impossible to get rid of moths.

    This.

"Oooh, let's be fancy, nice wool carpets, that sounds posh, 'ark at us!"

Stinks like a farmyard for the first few months then the moths. Christ, the moths.

  • I've always had carpets with significant wool content, I thought that was fairly normal.

We did have moths at one time and yeah they are hard to get rid of. They mainly went for a rug we had over a wood floor, and didn't get stuck into the hall or stairs fitted carpets. Pretty much ruined one rug which is a shame as it was a really nice hand made thing.

  • We went for the moth combo meal deal pack of wool carpet and wicker baskets. Fuckers will never leave.

  • House we bought was infested with larvae. One of the most disgusting things I ever saw. Didn't see the issue at viewings as the house was rammed with furniture. Had to stay at parents and fumigate. After 2 days I came in and ripped out every bit of carpet then deep vacuumed the floors. Never again.

  • Carpets can do one. Moths, mites, dust, that glass of milk your dickhead kid poured everywhere on purpose…

  • We're getting some mid range wool carpets from Tapi installed next week which are apparently moth proof, so it depends I think.

Either that or it'll be a Christmas feast for the little fuckers.

  • thanks on the carpet comments !

  • buying through the fitter. looking at (very rough) about 4k for 70m2 inc underlay (ouch!)

  • thanks - on the wool, would you say that about a wool blend too?

  • On carpets, saw this non-sisal, sisal looking carpet which is apparently flying out the door. Out of budget for me. I just want something that'll still be nice in 1-2 years, even with the odd bike passing through, when I plan to move (covered in bastard neighbours thread)

  • That seems a lot

I did 4 fair size bedrooms, 2 landings, 2 stairs with runners, 100pc wool Berber carpets from online carpets which he measured up for and I paid, and it was about 2.1k I think Inc the fitter and the underlay. The carpet was 1100 I think of that. I think my guy charges 6 quid a sq metre to fit roughly.

  • did you find your fitter locally or did they come through online carpets?

  • My memory of the case was that the sellers asked their solicitors if they needed to disclose it and they said it didn't qualify as vermin.

In which case it sounds shitty not to disclose it. But then they might not have bought the house.

  • I hate buying carpets. Last year we bought new carpets for the front room, stairs and landing. Within 2 days my 2 year old covered her hands in red ink (from stamp ink pads) and crawled up the stairs. Carpet utterly ruined. The front room carpet had multiple cups of tea, coffee, orange juice and hot chocolate on it in the first 2 months. Also utterly ruined.

  • I got him from my bro in law. The fitter turned up to fit on behalf of the carpet shop he purchased it all from and the bloke said I do 2 days a week self employed so call me if you need anything.

  • Out of budget for me.

Riviera do make lovely carpets though.
