Basically yes. They were originally designed for outdoor stuff you might not want in the car like wetsuits, wellies and realistically dog eggs. Having said that, your assessment is more accurate.

There's one by us that does the school run everyday with the pop up tent roof thing permanently attached, I don't know, just in case?

what the heck are these stupid things ? isn't there enough room on the inside of your huge great big 4x4 already ? is it somewhere to put your wet and smelly dog after a walk on the moors ? or your foot odour ridden walking boots ? or your screaming 7 year old on the way back from prep school ?
