  • Battery vacuums. Our Dyson has packed up. Any other decent options or do I just suck up paying into the brexit man’s tax-avoidance racket and having the battery pack up just out of warranty?

  • Ours started running out on the Max setting after three seconds, but years later runs on low power for ages, enough to get round most of the house. Quite odd. I think for the last model we had I bought a third party replacement and it was a crock of shit. /CSB

  • We've got a Vax Blade 4 (the pet version) and it's really decent for the money. The drawbacks are that it feels a bit cheap and the battery doesn't last long so worth buying a spare. Nothing has broken on it after about 4 years of hard use though and it's still really powerful.

  • The new Dyson V8s are really good. Loads of improvements over the earlier ones and they’re really quiet now.

What does ‘packed up’ mean though? Does it just need a new battery?

  • The batteries are replaceable. Theres a couple of hidden screws.

Alternatively if you have cordless power tools you can replace the Dyson battery with an adapter to use tool batteries and stop dicking about with the useless Dyson ones.

  • Look up replacing the battery pack with a Makita one

  • Given I have loads of Makita cordless kit my next vacuum will be one of theirs.
