as I remember it, back in the mists of time (2008 or something) they brought in more stringent safety tests for bike frames, and a lot of steel frames started bending the seatstay under artifically heavy braking forces (although aiui there were barely any failures in real-world usage). anyway, the simple solution was to add a little support brace so they would pass the test, so virtually everyone making steel mtbs with discs started adding it...

Quick side question - what's the “official reason” for the extra frame triangle between seat and chain stay. Extra rigidity for disc brake mounts? Spotted Genesis use to do this on some bikes so always wondered.
