Gravel bike advice

  • My friend wants to buy the Merida Silex gravel bike but can't decide between the 4000 model carbon frame with decent specs and the 700 model alloy frame with better specs.

  • Rule of thumb go for the best frame you can, as everything can be upgraded.

Or the colour you like best

  • the colour you like best

    This one

  • 1; biggest tyre clearance
    2; best colour
C; a price point you won’t cry about when you invariably stack it, on a fast downhill bit when out with your mates.
4; you’ll change you mind about what you want anyway so don’t sweat it too much.

  • Metal is the way forward!

  • Honestly there isn't much between a good alloy frame and a cheaper carbon one.

I'd be tempted to see if any good Black Friday deals pop up which may make one option significantly cheaper.

  • Go for a top end alloy over a cheap carbon frame.

  • Agreed. Often as well, as alloy isn't as sexy as carbon it's more likely to be discounted at this time of year.
