Honestly there isn't much between a good alloy frame and a cheaper carbon one.
I'd be tempted to see if any good Black Friday deals pop up which may make one option significantly cheaper.

Go for a top end alloy over a cheap carbon frame.

Agreed. Often as well, as alloy isn't as sexy as carbon it's more likely to be discounted at this time of year.
My friend wants to buy the Merida Silex gravel bike but can't decide between the 4000 model carbon frame with decent specs and the 700 model alloy frame with better specs.
