  • I don't drink milk at home and always want a much bigger coffee than espresso based drinks can satisfy. I could make an americano, but they're simply no way near as good as filter coffee is - to me. I really like filter coffee, I like the ritual of making it, I like the simplicity of it and how little equipment you need to make incredible coffee but its mostly about the taste. I just love the way good filter tastes.

  • ^ Amen to that

  • And a bit of me dies inside when I make delicious filter for someone. And they ask for milk.

  • The only response here is to pick up their drink, and gulp it down yourself. Then offer them a cup of tea

  • Different strokes for different folks. My partner drinks gross medium roast mass roasted grocery store coffee because she likes it, but I make it for her every morning and add half + half, because its what she likes ¯_(ツ)_/¯

  • Just purchased a new element to get an old europiccola back up and running.

I put it together last year but dismantled some of it to get other machines working!

It needs wiring, a switch and a steam tip. I have a chrome drip tray and wooden handles on the way too.

It's a proper mongrel - early orange base with rubber sub-base, millennium group head, modern anti vac valve and a pressure stat instead of twin elements. Oh, and a pressure gauge!

Edit I think I've posted about this one before actually. Here's a pic from last yr

  • Oh dear, you posted a pic with milk in your drink. Didn’t you read the previous page? Forum members are literally dying inside.

  • 😂😂😂😂 I'm sure they may just about survive

  • Unclear messaging earlier perhaps:

Steamed milk into espresso = acceptable

Milk from the carton directly into v60 brew = die inside

  • What about instant with some powdered milk?

  • As intended, so = acceptable.

  • Oh absolutely, couldn't agree more. I love a V60. Despite how shit some my home roasting is, it would be even shitter with milk chucked in it!

  • Having grown up in Germany, the land of Tschibo and Melitta, I have to admit I can't stand filter coffee. Thankfully pour over isn't so popular down here in Oz, and the espresso quality is top notch. Personally, I'll take an Americano over filter any day.

  • On the subject of filter, I'm struggling to get a nice cup of coffee from the clever dripper using Hoffmanns recipe. Generally, I find them lacking in flavour & maybe a bit hollow. I've tried grinding finer but it's not made much difference.

Anyone got a recipe they'd recommend?

  • what water are you using?

  • To be fair it's unfiltered tap water... But I can make a decent-tasting 1 cup v60 using the same water so that can't be the only culprit

  • Have you tried going corser ? My clever dripper grinds are quite bit corser compared to my v60 brews.

  • Yeah I was going to say try coarser and steep a bit longer, and use the hottest water possible, because by the time you fill it and chuck the coffee in it will be about 95C. Could also try upping the dose.

  • I've found the filters for the clever are quite a bit thicker than the regular hario ones I have for the V60. I've upped the dose, and try to preheat the brewer as well.

  • Interested in the Fellow Ode... have you listed it yet?

  • Anyone going in for James Hoffmann's decaf experiment?

A roastery local to me is bought into it but I don't really drink decaf, and most of my coffee drinking is espresso, so not sure how the beans would play ball with my machine...

  • Yep, looks interesting. Never done a cupping before so will be a learning experience! Was sold out on a lot of the UK roasters last night already including Square Mile! Craft Decaf still have some.

  • Yeah, I picked up a tasting set yesterday, only one place in France doing it but they're a decaf only roaster. Grabbed one of their own roasts as well.

I've been trying out a lot more decaf this year and most of the time it's underwhelming, occasionally I find a brilliant one but the next time I try it it's not so great again. Can't find a constantly decent decaf.

  • French press recommendations and how fine to grind please

  • Bodum & quite coarse but adjust to taste.
