  • That's rather nice. Is it an actual model or a proposal?

  • Thanks. They seem to have hired Seiko's photographer ...

    Some better pictures, here: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/the-zenith-x-collective-defy-skyline-cx-edition-live-pics

Not sure if I really like it having seen the pics. Fortunately it's so expensive it's a problem I don't really need to worry about.

  • Yeah, I think they over-egged the star but I think it is the first time I have seen a proximity fall-off detail on the face relief which moved from Architecture into Automotive and now horology. (Basically Rhino / Grasshopper procedural modelling)

  • Vintage Certina DS today.

  • Ha. What a great comparison.

Literally put in a vacuum or allowed to breath.

  • both bangers!

  • I need to get a watch valued for insurance. How do I go about it and what should I expect to pay?

  • Take it to a watch company that sells vintage watches ideally including the brand you have and pay what they ask for an insurance valuation. Never bothered myself.

Alternatively just eBay/chrono24 for sold prices and describe it on your insurance docs with a value you've seen online.

  • Ok thanks.

Anyone got a recommendation or advice and can say what I'd expect to pay?

  • I want to buy my wife a watch for christmas - is there anywhere good to go and see/try loads with her? Selfridges or similar maybe? Not sure what the best approach is - looking to spend in the sort of 300-500 range

  • The watch hall at Selfridges is… somewhat more expensive than that.

Depending on what sort of thing you want (brand? style? quartz/mechanical?), in that price range it's probably more like H Samuel / Goldsmiths / Beaverbrooks / John Lewis etc., so a trip to Westfield is probably in order.

I really like the new Dennison watches which are around that price range, they have (real) stone dial options, feel "special" and are quite a unisex sizing.

The Time+Tide watch space near Oxford Circus stocks them along with lots of other brands.

The quartz 35mm Tissot PRXs are also definitely worth a look at that price, lots of multi-brand places will stock those, including Watches Of Switzerland.

  • Mine loved her Tissot PRX , maybe slightly out of range though

  • The quartz ones (25/35/40mm) are within budget

  • Depending on taste / personal style, also worth looking at Mr Jones Watches (their shop is on Neal Street in Covent Garden), Paulin and Seiko (upstairs floor at the Grand Seiko boutique on New Bond Street).

  • Happy Friday folks!

  • Happy Friday. New to me today, this 1954 Smiths Deluxe a409. The same model that was gifted to the Everest team which peaked in 1953. It’s working beautifully and I love it!

  • Love that.
i really want a full lume watch.

  • Love it too, small part of me wonders whether the hands could do with a bit more black/contrast against the dial…
