Internal geared hubs?

  • My nexus 8 is nearly a year old. Has been used on my town/ commuter bike (short commute). Recommendation is to service after first 1000km and then approx every year. What sort of cost am I looking at for a shop service? Am based in Bristol. Trying to decide whether to attempt it myself.

  • £50-ish pounds I would expect.

I'd recommend Holy Spokes, Really Useful Bikes (out in Yate, but really knows his stuff), or St. Werburghs Cycles, or Bike Workshop on Colston Street.

  • sturmey 3sp hub on a new brompton. First ride I had to stop several times to re adjust the rear gear indicator chain. The locknut kept coming loose and the chain slackening to the point the gears would not work. Any suggestions?

  • Re Rohloff, is it notmal to be more noisy in some gears. Notice it from 7up.

  • Yep, they do get a little quieter with time, but 1-7 are always louder than 8-14

  • I recently serviced my Nexus 8 (red-band) hub after many years (at least 5) of use (plus it came from a fairly neglected Carrera at a bike-project so it wasn't new to me). It wasn't always heavily used, but it was used in all conditions. Overall it was in really good order inside, so I'd be slightly sceptical of the need to service it after just 1000km if it's working without issues.

As the photos show it still had lots of grease and just a touch of rust on the bearings between the innards and the shell. I gave it a dip in some engine oil and added some grease to all the bearings and gears before putting it back together. Running smoothly now.

  • Good to know. 1000k does feel like nothing. Will wait a bit before servicing

  • Just to play devil’s advocate, my experience is that Nexus hubs are not what they once were. I’ve owned a few, starting off with several used ones plucked from eBay, with unknown service history and neglected by me, all performed admirably. Then I got one on a bike I bought brand new I guess maybe 18 months ago, it was skipping crunching to the point of being unusable within 6 months despite anally keeping the cable tension adjusted correctly.

You definitely want your maintenance to be preventative rather than curative on a hub gear I’d say.

  • Managed to snap off a small section of the part that the cable (with bolt) slots into. Ordered replacement parts.

Worth remembering to be a bit more gentle when removing the rear wheel etc.

  • Ok so I have some play in the rear wheel which I suspect is the bearings needing replacing so think I may as well get a service as I think the bearings aren't that easy to access for the home mechanic.

  • Has anyone got any experience with setting up a Gen4 Bosch motor with Rohloff E-14 hub?

  • I have had this on a bike but not 'setup' myself, the bike came like that .. so did @t-v

  • Is that on a cargo? How did you find it? Part of me is wondering if its worth doing at all (currently have it setup with a manual Rohloff), and if it is worth doing what I need to get hold of in terms of firmware updates etc.

  • yeah on a GSD

was amazing, bike got stolen :(

one of the easiest thing was disconnecting the hub from the 'system' compared to removing Enviolo cables or Alfine even

It wasnt as responsive as shimano Di2 IME

Personally if you were retrofitting I'd get analogue Rohloff, there is a lot of integration with Bosch and how do you know wether your motor is compatible etc, could need diff connections/wires.

  • What do you need to know specifically? You want to retrofit your current one to a gen4? Doable, but you won’t be able to do it on your own. You’ll need dealer access to be able to setup and mate the e14 components, you’ll also need the prerequisite wiring loom, which 99% of the time is set up in factory by the manufacturer. I can have a look and gauge cost for the full parts list if you want.

It’s nice, but it won’t be a revolution in comparison to manual shifting. Multi shift is awesome though. Machine gun noises.

  • Thanks -- that would be amazing!

Current setup is a Gen 4 performance line motor and a manual Rohloff. It works ok but I got curious about the E-14 setup and was hoping it might help with the slightly clunky shifting. I built everything up myself (I think you've seen the build thread). My option is to change the shifter component on the Rohloff and associated wiring, or get a full setup from SJS. Apparently there is a difference between BES2 and BES3, but I have no idea which one I need.

  • That's interesting to hear -- I had no idea DI2 was an option.
