  • Does anyone else remember a documentary I'm fairly sure I was shown at school, it focused on a Steiner school (or similar, with no rules) - the kids did what they wanted, could vote on whether or not teachers were reemployed each year and one boy killed a rabbit with a machete? Felt a bit like a fever dream when I tried to explain it to a friend over lunch.....

  • The (in)famous Summerhill School ?

  • Yes, that's it exactly, thank you

  • one boy killed a rabbit with a machete

Misread as "rabbi" at first pass

  • anyone know why bbc mobile web pages are redirecting from bbc.co.uk to bbc.com, complete with adverts?

just noticed it happening in the last few days.

  • The BBC must think you're outside the UK as that's what you see when you view the site from overseas.

What mobile provider are you with? Got a VPN setup?

What do you see for your location if you go to https://www.whatismyip.com/ ?

  • No VPN but some Samsung WiFi security thing could be the reason?

  • it's definitely the wifi security on my phone as it doesn't happen with wifi turned off and it isn't happening on a different phone on the same wifi network.

another Samsung "feature" which I never realised that i didn't want - until now.

  • If I wanted to switch my bike to disc brakes what would be a reasonably priced fork to buy in order to try that? Specs would be

    1 1/8" steerer
    Disc brake (obviously)
    700c
QR (although I'm aware this isn't optimal for disc brakes).
Reasonable tyre clearance (at least 40mm)
Suitable for all-road/light gravel and light touring use, so probably steel.
Eyelets at least at the dropout.

Also, has anyone had disc mounts added to a steel frame? Anything in particular to consider?

  • Disc mounts to a frame you'd be better to ask in the frame makers thread as well.

  • I thought there was one but I can't find it.

  • Many forks and stays may not be up to the task, make sure you check with a competent framebuilder.

Very helpful bunch, and very honest with the idea is dangerous.

  • On the forks I think you should give up any aspirations of modifying your fork. You can buy 1 1/8" disc forks and the fork blades will be designed for the forces.

  • Hoover ate kids headphone cable.Supprisingly they still work.

What is the best fix? I remember seeing some form of rubber plastic glue stuff that hardens into soft rubber.

I've never had great success with shrink wrap on headphone cable because you need to get past the jack.

  • Silicone sealant might be one way of dealing with it.

  • I have what I suspect is a stuck D lock, it's been outside untouch for a few years so seems possible. When I've had this in the past the key would wiggle in the lock but catch at some point. This time the key doesn't move at all, is this likely a stuck lock or just the wrong key (there's a slim chance I've got the wrong key but I don't think so).

If a stuck lock what's the best way of getting it open with stuff I have at home (WD40, 3 in 1, chain lube, blowtorch, no plusgas)? It's about 20 minutes away so would prefer to avoid multiple trips.

  • I've got shoe glue, or an equivalent. I guess that work if I shape it with an ice cube?

  • Inconveniently that's the one I don't have.

  • Genesis Croix de fer forks can be found cheap secondhand that tick all those boxes.

  • Be mindful that changes in A-C measurements will have some impact on handling characteristics (apparently)

  • Got any automatic transmission fluid spare, as that can be used but might need a soak

  • In which case there is some random German one in orange packaging that's meant to be the best.

Let me find it before you order plusgas.

Edit: it's Aero Kroil. But fuck me it's expensive. Maybe just drown it in wd40 and see what happens first.
