Ha, I keeping thinking "I should get a kayak" for the watery stuff. Would probably be good for my shoulder (or more likely I'll totally fuck it).

Strava: API Agreement Update & How Data Appears on 3rd Party Apps
https://communityhub.strava.com/developers-api-7/api-agreement-update-how-data-appears-on-3rd-party-apps-7636If you have granted a third-party app access to your activity data, they will no longer be able to display it within their surfaces to any user other than yourself.
So not-JĂĽrgen being able to see https://squadrats.com/activity/6ap8TmxR603DYOw9hAKB is now banned?

I've got a kayak sitting in Limehouse doing nothing if you want it?
-
• #1080
I guess you might be able to work around that by ingesting the data rather than using their API or just bypassing it (hey, RWGPS, can you integrate tiling please?) but it's a bit of a death knell for tile bagging sites, no?

For real? I'm only partly serious - I don't have space for one - but I do definitely want to do some kayaking or similar at some point. Maybe take some kayak lessons or something first or just get a big open canoe and I presume you need some kind of license to do like the Thames and stuff? Can you canoe on canal paths? I've only ever used boats in Oz so I have no idea about the rules.

I have just abandoned it there with a mate keeping an eye and anyone who wants to take it away can have it. Potentially relevant point - it's quite a slim fit - my 32 inch waist can just about get in.

I don't think there is a specific qualification but you need to be 'experienced'. There are recommended courses. https://server1.boatingonthethames.co.uk/Paddling has loads of info.
Can you canoe on canal paths?
No, they are too dry. You can in the canal with a small craft licence. https://canalrivertrust.org.uk/things-to-do/canoeing-and-kayaking-near-me

Obviously too much cycling, not enough boating.

So Will that kill the Squadrats leaderboards? I've enjoyed breaking into the top, er, ten-thousand. It's also been useful to look at some of Jonathan France's small tiles to see how he attacked tricky squares.

The strava API change won't affect rideeverytile.com where you have to? manually import your strava export file I guess?
Shame if squadrats loses the automation, but if you have garmin that will still auto update? -

In all seriousness I'd really like to get these missing tiles. I have 2 old school kayaks and paddles but no splash deck think but that'd probably be safer to be honest.
I also have a van so could get them to the south coast pretty easily. It'd be sketchy for sure but would be quite an adventure. Also safety in numbers.

Those colours are messing with my head. Make water blue you crazy people!

That communication is pretty vague - what does 'your activity data' or 'surface' actually mean in practice? Why not give concrete examples?
It does seem reasonable to assume that displaying an actual activity trace to others, like your example won't be allowed (I didn't even realise Squadrats allowed this!).
I note that Squadrats now has a Garmin Connect sync option that wasn't there before, though. Also a few weeks ago, the author told me he had a dedicated iOS/Android app in progress.

Squadrats used to show the actual traces of rides that other people had done if you looked at their maps. I wondered how JFrance had got some of the tiles and could see the actual traces, now it doesn't show them and only shows the coloured tiles visited.

I think kayaking in one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, which also happens to house the largest naval base in the country, to get three tiles is the kind of commitment this thread deserves.

See @jellybaby post above https://www.lfgss.com/comments/17586357/ for an example.
In fact the Squadrats privacy policy clearly says
Our App requires your outdoor activities data (such as bike rides, runs, swims, etc.) in order to be functional to you. The moment you allow the Squadrats App to read data from your fitness app (such as Strava), or allow our Mobile App to track your activity, the data from your activities will be sent to our servers. This data then becomes publicly accessible to other users of the App. By using the App you agree that your activity data becomes public.
Which is clearly at fundamental odds with new Strava policy - but then, does the Strava policy apply to already ingested data? 🤷

When you put it that way... when do we set sail?

the largest naval base in the country
Those tiles must have been got by a fair few squad rats.

Showing the ride traces like the example might be a problem, but showing a map with coloured tiles of where I've been may not be, so Squadrats may just have to remove the ability to display traces of other users.
I've only wanted to look at the traces of other uses a couple of times, and that was mostly out of curiousity. I've never "needed" to look at one to see where they accessed the tile as that can be guessed most of the time. JFrance did get a couple of tiles (as have I) thanks to GPS jitter but other people's stats don't bother me (I'm trying to clean up my own data though).

I had a walk reported recently that had GPS gitter. I don't think it had got me any tiles it must've just annoyed some poor darling. I cut the offending bit out and cleaned up my RWGPS tracks.

Devs of wandrer and squadrats are having talks with strava reps in the coming days according to strava club posts.

Ok, looks like Strava is just shit at writing. From the 'No one can use api' updated to 'everythin will be fine'.
No Impact to Most Developers
We recognize that our platform thrives because of the creativity and dedication of third-party developers who build tools to complement and extend Strava’s capabilities. We are steadfast in our commitment to fostering this ecosystem. We anticipate that these changes will affect only a small fraction (less than .1%) of the applications on the Strava platform–the overwhelming majority of existing use cases are still allowed, including coaching platforms focused on providing feedback to users and tools that help users understand their data and performance.
It adds my walks and SUPs, which is handy for me living on the seafront.
I also like the Strava plug-in to help with planning routes.
