Popped over to the plot to pick the Chrysanthemums. Nice to have flowers this late in the year. Just had some raspberries delivered I ordered months ago, no bloody clue where they're going!

30 minutes at the plot this morning putting down more cardboard on my wife’s plot. Nearly finished before we start on my side of things.
Hopefully will get some onions and broadbeans in next weekend.

Guy Garvey dropping this on 6 music right now.

I like Guy Garvey at the allotment, his tone and melody suit the nature of it very nicely

I can never forgive him for Elbow, but he is very good at playing other music on the radio.

Removed the path between our two biggest beds today, ended up an absolute beast. Hard to see the difference between woodchip and manure but you get the idea.
That’s the whole plot dug over/covered and almost all the paths renewed as well.
Hopefully just the occasional visit over winter to keep an eye on things but the work is done. One of my mates up there is getting in a mini digger in soon so will make the decision whether the walipini or not then.

Ordered a cheap 3x2m tunnel as worked out cheaper than building another water pipe one.
Might get in trouble for it if they decide it’s a structure but will dig it in a little and have it at the back so a bit less prominent.
We were recently donated a waterbutt and we’ve got drippers and hose so this one will hopefully be easy to maintain.

I loved the video, the song not quite so much
Bit biased as it's filmed at my allotment, and others around Bristol, and features a few neighbours and other beloved community figures

Thinking about next year already, need recs for varieties of the following:
Courgette
Aubergine
Sweetcorn
BroccoliWe failed miserably at those this year, none of them really got going.

Special Swiss sweetcorn from the real seed company is genuinely the best corn I’ve found for growing in the uk.

Agreed, I switched off the sound pretty damn quickly and just watched the video.
That's some big squashes.

Annoyingly a mole has arrived in my allotment. Anyone had this? Not sure if to leave it or try remove it.

Don’t make mountains out of molehills

Moles eat meat, voles eat veg
So, leave it alone?

Could try the ultrasonic repellants? No idea how effective they are.
Growing up our Labrador would wait for hours by the hole and eat the little buggers if they pop up. -
• #5319
I mean I am included to leave it alone, but the growing number of mounds are a bit annoying.
I hoped it would leave but it seems to just be going around in circles now.

Harvest the nice dirt they bring up, get a cat, and wait for them to leave. Our wills be there one year, then gone the next.
I looked into various repellants but none seemed reliable and they just push the problem to someone else's land.
Voles on the other hand I would gladly remove with dynamite. Little bastards eating the roots from all our chard, pumpkins etc.
I sank 10mm mesh about 30cm down all around our beds which seems to have reduced the amount of loss to the critters. -

I rescued a mole that was on our road when I was a kid, and was trying to dig through the kerbstone. It bit me for my troubles.

Wind has given everyone a kicking at our site. Lots of netting and cheap tunnels flapping in the breeze.
Piled up some chip in our tunnel to hopefully help the chillis survive the winter then sealed it up with tons of extra chip all round the edge.
Was 18°C inside the tunnel today which is pretty good.Wanted to build the new tunnel today but not worth it because wind.

Haven't been down to have a look yet but know my 12ft Jerusalem artichokes were already on the lean before the winds. Fingers crossed my sprouts are still upright.
Depending on how tall you are and how much space you feel you need. I being tall only ever intended of putting a footing down on the perimeter of the greenhouse. Everything is either bear soil or wooden raised beds. When I rotate the green house to a more sensible orientation I will remake the beds, but wider. I only really need walking space
