• It seems like our patio doors question is going to come around a bit more quickly than our kitchens question now - and a bit quicker than we thought.

    We have a 4m x 2.1m opening.

    Do we want:

    • two big sliding panels
    • slide and turn doors
    • French doors

I really don't know. I like the sight line of big sliders and I don't think we'd want to open the whole thing up anyway.

I've heard (and read on here) that the slide and turn doors can be quite hard to open up if you just want to throw the cat out of the door or nip out quickly.

I can't find any French doors I like so they're probably not a good option.

    What do we want?

  • Needs a bit more context; what do have/plan to have immediately outside? Patio/landscaping/funky business?

How are you planning on laying out/using the space inside? Where's the kitchen & dining area going? Bench seating?

Figure out how you'd like to use the opening first, then work backwards to spec glazing to suit.

  • Needs a bit more context

    This was my thought.

Given the size I think French doors are out. A mate has a full wall of slide and turn doors, they seem to be able to open one quite easily.

In the summer it's nice to have the whole wall gone. However, their garden is more shaded, although I like the idea it would be too hot for our place I think.

  • Immediately outside will be a patio, long term possibly one that's covered by a pergola with wisteria on it as a bit of screening/summer shade. The garden is west facing and people with similar setups have suggested they can get quite warm in summer.

Where the compass is will be a seating area, probably with a chair or sofa against the wall with the non-opening window in it.
