  • Looking at both photos it's clear to see that you can mount the flap inside or outside the fender profile. Any particular reason to choose one or another?

  • Personally I did it because I got it to slot neatly inside the rolled edges inside the guards. I can see the merit in it being more flexible and easily accessible mounted on the outside though. With the wavy guards I probably couldn’t have managed that at all tbh

  • A pair of tiny dome nuts would be the icing on the cake there! God I am sad.

  • You’re so right - they Would look great! Man of details clearly ☺️☺️

  • Some updates: Mike from VeloDuo sent across a new pair of stays from his stock but sadly, these too were the wrong shape (if the right width - just). The curve of the stays is still a lot deeper than that of the guards. I emailed Mike about it expressing disappointment at the design flaws by Berthoud, but expressing how amazing his customer service and quality have been so far (because they have) and asking if he'd accept a return.
Anyway, turns out the Berthoud tooling has recently been updated so the new design guards and stays are shallower. Hopefully the new stays will arrive soon and I can be ready for the rainy weather next week!!

  • I may not be a dad but heck have I been doing a lot of dad o'clock rides lately. Time to get back on the Vitamin D supplements?

  • Will they fit mounted on the inside of the mudguard?

  • Tried that! The curled lip inside the guards butts up against them.

  • I've had two sets of GB mudguards, both returned, either QC department at Berthoud isn't cutting it, or both my sets were Friday afternoon jobs.

  • Ah shit, feel bad for suggesting GB now!

  • One of those cases where paisa was not, in fact, vasool. 🙃
Not to worry, others had endorsed them too! Let's see if my experience doesn't end up being like @jontea and Mike finds a pair of stays that actually fit the guards correctly. Might have to ride the Raleigh fixed next week in the rains...
In the meantime, anecdotally anyway, riding this bike without guards feels curiously freeing and also uncomfortable, a throwback to the glory days of 2022 when I thought being covered with mud was de rigeur for being an outdoorsy person.

    Is it not??

  • You can choose comfort sometimes.

  • Sorry to hijack your thread @vthejk, but this pic will make you feel less alone (700x60 ordered from Goldsprint)

  • HAH oh dear. That’s actually really quite reassuring!! I think I shall be returning mine, cba with the faff and it’s rainy next week too. Velo duo seem to sell individual VO guard replacements, might ask if they’d just sell me a rear to match my front.

  • I think winter is, officially, coming.

  • Did you ride through blueberry yoghurt or is that sealant?! Forever a fan of that clear powder finish.

  • Is that Pirelli tyre not mounted backwards?
Edit: I am wrong I think

  • @Browndonneur It was sealant! Muc-off no puncture sealant, which is fine but not exactly the ultimate puncture fixing that it claims to be.
@Hulsroy I just checked, it is the right way around but in your defence it looks wrong from the images, as the 'shoulders' have an angle to them.

Not having mudguards on is a slippery slope to actually just going full monstercross like this. The Stayer caaaan clear 2.1” tires….
What’s a good lightly knobbly, fast rolling 2.1”? Mezcals?

  • Tried Mezcals for the first time, crazy good on tarmac and dry terrain, but a bit unpredictable on wet leaves/mud/roots. Lovely tires i'd say, but you need to ride cautiously if you're not in the best conditions.

Pirelli Cinturato M in the 650x50 format might also be a good alternative!

  • Ooooh okay! I have zero plans to ride this bike on serious off-road (drop bar geo off road just doesn’t suit me tbh) so roots etc shouldn’t be a problem!!
I think I’ll run these Gravel Hs for a short while and see how much I hate no mudguard life, and if it’s not terrible Mezcals/Gravel Ms in the new year!
I can’t help but remember how much fun this bike was in its past life with 2.1” Rutlands. Proper hoot.

  • These get my vote; 2.2 mind.

  • Just been catching up here, really nice pics as usual, the Stayer looks really great, pretty ‘perfect winter bike’ whatever that is

(im trying to expel any thoughts of needing a perfect bike to carry on riding through the winter and just go outside and pedal heh)
