I recently had a thing where I started a new project after my band of 11 years wound down. all that old material was v much a real reflection on my thoughts and feelings, but the new stuff managed to not be that and everything happened much easier. Except I wrote something I was really proud of, am now working on more stuff and have lost the 'don't really care' vibe which was so helpful initially. kinda irritating.

Ha yes! So frustrating. I once (in my misguided middle age) thought i'd cracked the code of writing songs I actually liked but nope... turned out it was just that i'd had a couple of back to back non-stinkers before the old blank-page fear and destructive self-criticism came rushing back.
Better that than the altentive tho: putting someting out there you've convinced yourself is good, but which on reflection turns out to be total catshit. That's happened once or twice as well. *shudders

There will be pics.

Get in.

100% this! Quality comes through quantity. Nothing is ever perfect, only a snapshot of where you stopped trying to improve it.

Mrs. Nahguavkire has booked me a guitar building course as a birthday present! Won't be starting until next year but I'm extremely excited.
Premise of the course is to build a steel string acoustic with assistance from the instructor and use of their workshop.
I think we get a choice of body styles but I presume choice is confined to a few shapes offered by the instructor as opposed to building your own templates for a unique shape.
I've had a peep on their website though and they seem to do a dreadnought with slightly rounded shoulders so I'm thinking of having a go at that.I'm now neck deep in specs as I believe wood choice, hardware choice, inlay / finishes and even details such as bracing are up to my choice...
I'm thinking Cedar top with Mahogany neck, back and sides, 25 1/2" scale length, slotted headstock and no cutaway for starters...
Here's one from a recent attendee of the course...

Good luck. You'll love it. I'm still halfway through mine. Should be finished around 2030.

Totally relate with the songwriting struggles. I've been noting down a few song ideas (music, not words) I like recently, but am neither a singer nor a lyricist.
I can't be arsed looking for people who'll fit in, managing time, bouncing ideas back and forth, but still want to enjoy that feeling of having done something so it's been slowly simmering for a while that I want to do a little EP for myself, just to show myself I can
I will most likely never release it, but I'm keen to embrace enjoying the process with neither pressure nor expectation. I really hope I can get round to doing it, but I will need to strike a balance between not putting (time) pressure on myself and still having enough of a deadline to get shit done, while juggling work, a return to cycling and a baby. We'll see!
In other news, thanks all for pushing me towards monel strings for my acoustic, really been enjoying the tone and, having gone down to light gauge, been enjoying the ease of playing on them. A little truss rod adjustment went a long way to making it really enjoyable to play!
Figured it'd be a good time to experiment a bit with recording and putting one of my ribbon mics to use - the ribbon is very noisy and the playing is pretty shoddy but I'm pleased with the sound considering I hardly did any further experimenting with mic positioning and post production: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1jEYdzBBJQzpsifyWSTlMJdPjBhJoVPu9/view?usp=sharing

A (slightly) amusing aside on the subject of unrecorded/unfinished tunes... I've got a practically finished acoustic instrumental ditty that's been hanging around for a couple of years, just never recorded it properly. It's a bit maudlin TBH, quite funereal in tone but with an uplifting key change in the middle that turns it right around, it's cute and it's in open E, which is a nice, er, change for me.
I know it needs some military type marching drums on it but I've just this moment realised while taking a piss that the main melody should actually be played by bagpipes. ๐ณ๐คฃ

That's the kind of realisation I'd expect one to make after a muffin-based breakfast in Amsterdam rather than during a routine visit to the bog ๐
Also thanks both for the feedback, I found the results encouraging with so little effort. Just treated myself to a Black Friday reverb plugin (Relab LX480) and having a play with it, sounds great on the guitar and definitely better than the plate IR I have on that clip ๐

Man i'd love to do something like this. Can't imagine having the time (or cash) to spare with a young family and busy job tho. Daily updates when you get started please!
Love the sound of your choices as well btw (which is odd given we usually have very differnet tastes). I was half expecting you propose something in crabon fibre with a cutway, no headstock and built in handle or something.

Enbrace the bagpipes! Literally!

Hahaha, I'm oddly traditionalist about acoustics (and electrics to be honest but I do like the idea of some of the modern headless thingies...).
I had a cedar and mahogany Takamine that my mate pinched years ago, I do get visitation from time to time :)
I've always wanted a replacement for it and this seems like a good time to DIY it! Otherwise I'll just have to keep pining over Lowdens until I eventually muster up the moolah to buy one...I've already modelled up my headstock design and think I'm settled on it... for now anyway...
I drew up a 6-in-a-line one too while I was at it and I'm already having a great time...This may take a while though, Nahguavkire Jr. is arriving in early January and I suspect I'll soon know your pain regarding availability of time and funds...

Bargain for ยฃ550!
I've gone away from Marshally sounds the last few years but the amount of Deftones I've been listening to lately would be perfectly suited to that setup! -

Bizarrely - I've found the clean channel is amazing. Not what I had expected.

Is there such a thing as a battery powered headphone amp for electric guitar that has a decent phone-controlled DSP with effects and stuff?
-
• #15447
This is awesome - really look forward to seeing how it goes.
What's the time scale of the course, or rather how long do they typically reckon you can get one built.
Have you started to plan your rosette yet?!

• #15448
Lovely hearing the stuff that people that people have posted.. I made this last year but have yet to find the time to finish anything elseโฆ
-
• #15449
They reckon 4-6 months of one day a week.
I haven't started on thoughts of the rosette or any binding / purfling yet to be honest...
I'm trying to find a balance between classic / elegant / tasteful but also not just going with the standard run of the mill bits and pieces so I'm not going to rush those bits I reckon...

My daughter's guitar teacher showed me his 55 Telecaster yesterday, in cream and white. Quite nice. He told me he had a 53 somewhere as well. He was using a vintage Gretsch to teach on. Shame I can't play a note
A mate of mine who's struggling to get his songs down in any form asked me for advice on how to move forward. I told him to relax and just get what he could down to the best of his ability, it's only a document of where you are right now. Great advice, I wish I could take it onboard myself. ๐
