What kind of mad person is leaving their phone at home yet traveling far enough they need navigation?
-
• #3404
Runners?

Runners
He already said ‘mad person’

I mean wear an arm band or plot the route in advance or something.

Cheap skate Garmin's don't have navigation or a map page, they just record the activity and provide summary stats (time, speed, distance, pace, etc).
The hack is to install the Komoot app on the watch which gives you a map to follow on a device that didn't have it before.
Most people are doing this with routes they've plotted in advance...

I assumed Garmin watch = nav.
I'd still carry a phone if I was running somewhere so unfamiliar that it needed navigation.

It's niche but some of my tile-wankering has me needing accurate navigation (to ensure I hit a specific set of tiles) but I don't want the faff of running with a phone.
Luckily my Forerunner 945 watch does have navigation so I don't need to work around it, but it's useful to know that the cheaper Garmins can get it.

Cross post to the classifieds but I'm selling a Hammerhead Karoo 3
Great bike computer with the best routing and mapping I've experienced on a bike computer but I've decided to stay in the Garmin ecosystem.

You gave it 9 days?
Was it just familiarity with Garmin or what? It's why I stay with Garmin even though they're pretty shit.
Throw some pics up with it turned on? Show us your maps!

Love my Karoo 2, pretty sick. Can't imagine picking a Garmin over it

Longer than 9 days to be fair.
Main reason is that every other bit of health, fitness kit i own is Garmin and they all mesh nicely together. I've been using Garmin for nearly 2 decades so I'm very familiar with them and there's so much ingrained muscle memory.
The Hammerhead was definitely better in many areas, particularly the mapping (have added pics to my sales post) and as @PhilDAS say's it's very slick and feels more contemporary. The only thing that i found annoying were the audio prompts (which can be turned off). The battery is also not as strong as Garmin and as I'm quite keen on some long rides it may have caused issues down the line, I'd say the battery would be fine for rides under 150 miles.

Battery life is why I "upgraded" to the 1040 Solar, so there's no way I'd go backwards there. Plus, like you, I'm balls deep in Garmin so it's unlikely I'll be jumping ship unless it's to something groundbreaking.

speaking of battery life, any one try the Coros Dura? Bikepacking.com has it using ~10% battery life on a cloudy/rainy 7 hour ride (with no real solar gain). On a sunny ride it lost 10% but gained 6% back which is pretty impressive even if not applicable to the UK most days.

I have one. Pre-ordered when it was first announced. Didn't get to use it before I had to send it back for the free upgrade to the version where the tabs on the back don't snap off if used with certain mounts. Now haven't had a chance to use it since I received it back. 🙄
It's not as 'nice' to use or look at screen wise as my karoo 3...but I bought it as a back up, or for whenever I get a chance to do some multi day stuff. Purely because of the battery life. -

That said though... The new upgrade to the Hammerhead Karoo supposedly gives 3 different battery settings that 'supposedly' can increase the maximum from 15hrs to 35hrs!

If you use an upgraded battery save mode... Love my Karoo, still think it's the best GPS I've ever tried, but the battery life isn't great. Excited about this anyways, a lot of updates rolling since SRAM buyout

Yeah I was able to uncheck a lot of stuff that I don't use anyway, so hopefully it'll have increased the battery life by a few hours.

Some cool new features going into RWGPS and being discussed for the future...

Some good stuff but they'll never make up for losing the ability to search for routes!
-
• #3422
Can absolutely still do this on the desktop version..
-
• #3423
It's only the 'Explore' function which is not nearly as powerful as the old 'Find'.
I had a long chat with them at the time. They explained that they weren't able to keep the old search capability as it was old tech, not supported. I understood their issues, but it was a big loss.
I still pay for it as I've got so much use and pleasure out of it over the years, and it's way better than Komoot, Strava or anything else I've seen, but it's just not as good - for what I want - as it used to be!
-
• #3424
I've not really missed that. I just use Explore to target areas I'm looking at and then use their filters/search box. If I want a specific route without an area, an audax name, then I can still just search for the name of the ride.
