Look, America is a wild place. I can't explain this behaviour, just like I can't explain why some people put lift kits on their F-150s and hang truck nuts off the hitch or why they'd vote for a literal criminal to hold the office of the President.
Really my only argument for my decision is based on preserving government funding. Americans don't like taxes, so we have to raise money for some government services in ways that others find distasteful.
