It was years ago now, but similar experience of Belem being rammed. I also didn't think they were particularly special - pretty sure we had better elsewhere though I can't remember where. But I was far more interested in Azeitão cheese that I'd never heard of before and made my best effort to make up for 3 and bit decades of not having known about it to be able to seek it out to eat. Cheese > custard tarts.

Some highlights from a recent trip:
Cervejaria Ramerio - a famous seafood restaurant with mildly aggressive turnover. Like Tayyabs. Don't go to luxuriate over a long meal, get in, order wine, smash through loads of plates of delicious seafood (prawns, razor clams, langoustines, crabs etc) and go somewhere nice to digest it.
Little tap room - sells lovely beer, but the reason to go is the view over Lisbon and the castle. Go at night time and just stand on the street with locals and students taking in the view.
Vino Vero - vibey little winebar, sit on the street with the locals drinking lovely vinho verde!
Botanical Gardens - these were banging, really dramatic in a massive greenhouse. Lovely way to spend an hour or two.
Go to one of the various viewpoints (Miradouro) with a bottle of wine to watch the sun set and the lights come on over the city.
It may be a bit basic, but we did a sunset sailing trip around the river. This one. It was great. Lovely way to see the city, cool sailing boat was cool. Sunset is nice. There was wine.
The sailing chap recommended something that I would have loved to do if we'd had time. There's a cool 'abandoned city' thing on the other side of the river, used to be linked to tuna canning I think. He said you can get taxi boats things to go there and there are two restaurants there that he said were amongst his favourite in Lisbon. Looks like this one I think. Really wish we'd had time to go....

Great pastel de nata right outside our hotel. My wife sent a photo from the inside of the place and one of her colleagues from Portugal recognised where we were and said it was his preferred place to buy them.

I'm Portuguese myself and lived in Lisbon for about 6 years - never tried the Pastéis de Belém store. It's usually seen as a tourist trap, you can get good pastéis de nata/Belém literally everywhere.

Take the ferry to Trafaria in Belém, cycle to Costa da Caparica, you'll have a bike lane all the way.
If anyone needs, there is rides every Tuesday from Atrium Saldanha, 7pm.
Reach out, there is a few community bike kitchens around the country run by volunteers:

Was in Lisbon in January. Try and get a table at taberna de sal grosso for amazing meal out.
Lots of bars in Barrio Alto - worth just exploring there if you're looking for social bar. Crafty Corner near Se de Lisbon at the start is decent and open bar so easy to get chatting to others.
One thing - just like any city, all the bars/craft beer places are a little ££ compared to anywhere more local/not tourist areas where everyone's sticking to super bock.

For cafe and coffee stops, seek out the non tourist places, about half the price but chances are they'll only take cash.
For some historical stops, look out for the business with the Loja com historia signs.
Was also surprised by how good this sunset boat tour was.. think there were a few solo people but could be all couples!

Had a great time, thanks for the recs.
- I thought Sintra was great. I didn't get to do the three main attractions, but if you follow this guide you could do it all in a day.
- Tasca Mastai (bar, tapas)
- Building on @owl recs: Cervejaria Ramerio was great for food. Vino Vero and the 8a tap room near it were great. This is a wonderful area and was 2 mins from where I was staying. In this area we found Onda Cocktail Room which was 10/10.
- Two places to drink near eachother. Crafty Corner and this place .
- Near the two above places are two great restaurants. We got in Ze de Mouraria but also on the list was Zé dos Cornos
- Belem / LX Factory was a good thing to do. Tried to get in Ultimo Porto which is next to a big working port but they close after lunch..!

We are off to Lisbon at the end of the month. My question is do they take cash in most places?

I found a few places didn’t, a couple of trendy bakeries and a cafe - young persons places iirc. It was a place that was very card friendly / dominant.

Cheers, I’m awful at budgeting on trips and want to use cash so that once it’s gone it’s gone.

Just back from a cracking midweek break In Lisbon so I thought I’d share some highlights.
Estufa Fria Garden’s mentioned above if was a real treat, calm peaceful and well worth the walk up.
Pizza at Lupita, they have a pretty quick turn over so it’s worth waiting for a table. The staff were so friendly and have time for you even though they don’t get a moments peace. It’s busy! because it’s good.
Ao 26 (the vegan project) properly inventive, lots of fun things to eat and drink. The peanut and chocolate tart! Oh yes! And very reasonably priced.
Fabrica for coffee. Coffee Lab not so much.
I really nice little city, everything you’d want is in walking distance.
This was pre-pandemic, no idea what it would be like now.
