No riding for me as I broke my thumb three weeks ago and had it operated on two weeks ago but I did manage to put my singlespeed back together so I can hopefully ride it soon.

No riding for me as I broke my thumb three weeks ago
I feel your pain. My right thumb got proper smashed up in a bike accident September last year. Plaster on for 6 weeks, then at least another 6 weeks with a splint and physiotherapy. It has healed but is far from being what it was before. The most grievous persisting problem is the destruction of my handwriting, once a very pleasing italic style. Also, wiring plugs or anything with small screws. Happily, bike riding is OK other than using the Campag Ergopower thumbshifter when it's cold.

How did you make it fit?

I did a 48x16 circuit down to The Map House at Beauchamp Place to look at the tube maps, wideyed at what’s on show and the prices.

Fuck, 6 weeks is a hella long time to be in plaster.
I’ve got an appointment tomorrow to get this stupid thing off and stitches out. I’ve no idea how many stitches I have or whereabouts so I’m intrigued to see how it’s looking under there! I’ve also got no idea what they’re going to do after they take the stitches out. Two weeks in this huge thing has killed me, I have an old sweater I’ve cut the sleeve short on and one, non waterproof, not very warm jacket that fits over it, everything else I own is too tight! I’m hoping they send me away with something less cumbersome. A Velcro splint would be very nice. I don’t have any broken bones now as they just removed the fragment of bone I’d broken off and threw it away but they then had to suture the ligament to the remaining bone which I think is going to take a while to heal.
I’m resigned/looking forward to just riding singlespeed when I get back to it as I expect shifting will have to wait.

Thumb talk;
Do your physio, don’t push, don’t end up with a fucked up hand.
Guess which one I snapped 30 years ago.

Yeah, my wrist (broken at age 17 or 18 in a motorcycle crash) is like that and doesn't move as much as the other one.

Broke my scaphoid, a fucking tiny bone, had a plaster for 3 months in summer time. Half my fingers were covered by it. You can't imagine the smell. Was a huge relief when they removed it. Bonus point I did this 1 week before my baby came. But I had 3 months off work to stay with my wife and the baby.
Never break your scaphoid. -

How long is your drive if you need to cycle to your postbox??

Even singlespeeding off the table for me for a while longer.
It was just stitches out and straight into another cast today. At least this one’s a bit slimmer so should have a few more clothing options.
Thumb was in a bit more of a mess under the dressings than I’d realised it would be.

You are right-handed I imagine? I too. My accident was literally a fortnight before we were due to move home, so of course there was a ton of stuff to do. I was able to ride a bit on flat bars after about three months. But I didn't get to ride either of the Campag Ergopower bikes until a couple of months ago. Btw I like the bike you picture above, that's a proper practical machine!

Of course I am!
We've had to cancel a trip to Portugal for our birthdaays (mine on the 12th, the wife's the 13th) just as we had to cancel a trip to Austria when I did my collarbone last year.
I'm not very popular!

could be worse... On 1st Dec last year (date is etched into my memory) I nearly cut all the fingers off my right hand with a table saw. Three months later I could work & ride again

I feel “nearly” needs some clarification here.

Fellow scaphoid fracture victim here... Not a bike accident but on a snowboard. Hopefully the only time I have to be carried down on a ski stretcher. After surgery and I think 3 casts later I was able to begin rehab which felt like a lifetime. My thumb was sore and sensitive to the touch for a long time. Not to mention the ligaments and forearm muscle atrophied. Here is a harsh reminder of the stitches and pins that were left inside my wrist over 25 years ago. My twins were enfant toddlers at the time living with inlaws so was lucky to have support of family. Take care all!!!

Ha! There were some deep lesions but worst of it was 1 severed tendon & several severed nerves. Interestingly I discovered,if you go to a walk-in centre with a towel wrapped around your hand with blood dripping from it, you get through triage immediately!
it's official, 2nd Nov is international singlespeed day, and being a predominantly fixed gear and single speed focused forum (ahem) I though it was appropriate to have a topic.
please post a pic of the singlespeed bike you rode on #internationalsinglespeedday
