yeah was gonna go with kool stops anyway. i think they have both modes
I've used 9 speed r/d over a 10 speed cassette with friction shifters, works a treat. Minimal difference between overall depth of 8,9, and 10 speed cassettes. Just set the end stops, run friction, use whatever combo of cassette/derailleur you fancy.
