I have a sub in the loft that's not being used if you want to try

Properly integrated sub should not be distinguishable from the stereo soundstage.

If it's going thud thud then it's probably a pos to start off with and definitely not set up right.

You can set a sub up with REW and a special microphone. I think it's worth doing. I added a sub to desk monitors and it works very well.

Mentioned in a response up thread but looking to sell my LS50 black edition, with KEF stands.

Big statement, careful with that one!

Different speaker to main system, different response, different amplification, different crossover position, different physical position, chance of facing different direction. Without matching all of that up and/or doing some pretty in-depth dsp it’ll never be well integrated.

Agreed, perhaps I should have qualified my statement somewhat.

Otoh if a sub is rolled off at the right frequency and at an appropriate volume level, it can sound pretty good in my experience, and at least sound unobtrusive in the stereo image.

If the main speakers have very little low frequency output meaning that the sub is putting out more of the upper bass frequencies, then position of it becomes more important.

All just in my experience, which is that a sub can still sound good with decent smallish speakers, without having to go to the degree of integration that you describe.

thanks for advice folks. I dont think the other half will allow a large diameter, floor-facing sub so am looking at a cheeky 8-10in front facing or (dare I say it) a deal on a second hand sonos amp, which i have the luxury of as I'm driving from a Sonos Amp.

Speakers with cabinet damage like this, are they repairable? I've got some B&W 685s and never been truly impressed, but don't really know what I am doing with older speakers tbh.

You can probably treat them like any veneered furniture. Cabinet scraper, grain filler, stain/oil/varnish finish.

Have you considered 2 (or 3) smaller subs and setting them up avoiding room nodes (and corners). With that number you could probably slap one next to each main speaker and one along a side wall.

My subs are all persona non Grata at the moment. One is a glorified coffee table, one in the loft and one in the garage.

New power supply, new stylus and..loud humming and extremely low volume on my project Pro-Ject turntable. Taken the arm out and wires obviously snapped but not sure if I did that during removal. This stuff is the thinest wiring I have ever seen! Don't think I can sort this myself ☹️

Likewise the bk sub - what veneer is it? Does it have the auto on/off?

Occasionally one will start distorting after being played for a few hours. This happens once every few weeks when used as my daily driver. Turn them off and come back to them next day and all is well again.

They had a new KT66 in each to rectify the problem but it didn’t work.

I think it might be because I had them set to run at 15 ohms for my LS3/5a but then went back to running them on 8 ohm speakers but that’s based on no genuine understanding at all.

It’s black and yes it has the auto on/off.

Thinking about trying some new bookshelf speakers with the “kitchen” (basement kitchen-dining-living room) set-up. It’s a Bluetooth streamer into an early 70s Pioneer sx-300 and some Q acoustic 2020i’s. It’s only for keeping me amused while I cook so never intended to be hi-fi. The issue I have is that it’s in an alcove next to the chimney breast and the combined effect of a very low damping factor in the amp and rear-ported speakers is making the bass very loud and wooly. I get it’s never gonna be razor sharp with the amp and location and that’s fine, I like soft 70s style bass anyway, I just figured some front-ported or sealed speakers might work a little better in the location.

Any recommendations? Should say that the amp has a teeny 7w per channel, so looking for something pretty efficient too. Mid-c aesthetics also preferred to go with the amp.
