Did he just go straight from getting it on the rim to loading the sealant? I always inflate without sealant first and then leave it overnight if poss.
Yeah.
I tend to do that with new tyres, if nothing else to see what the seal is like before sealant is added. But I also use a syringe - it's a bit more faff but it's definitely cleaner and I recommend using one if you don't have a workshop/outside.
