  • just checked the footage, wild fixie skidding!

  • Update: the (semi) final version of my messenger/daily fixed gear Pompetamine, swapped the bars for something less 'extreme gravel' and put the full size fenders on. Tested it this morning shift, it's a nice ride :)

  • Mulo survived the winter, although surprisingly rust-prone and should have greased it more thoroughly. Thinking about repainting, but let's see. Also, have a suitable light canti fork lying around, might give it a try!

  • Really good! What size tyres have you got on there?

  • 40 in the front on a wide rim and 43 in the back on a narrower one

  • Nice. Part of the reason I sold my Pompino was lack of clearance for proper chunky tyres. Looks like the Mulo has loads more!

  • looks really cool

  • The answer for clearance on a Pomp' is 650B ;-)

  • Ooooh, that's good. I was tempted to go 650b on mine but it didn't fit me well enough and I didn't love it enough to justify the expense. I moved all of the parts (including a front disc brake) over to an elderly Genesis Day One which ticks the same boxes but with slightly more tyre clearance and which fits me a bit better.
I don't think I can see myself without a "sensible" fixed gear with chubby tyres and decent brakes any time soon. My road bike is gathering dust because I love my stupid, battered but sensible Day One so much.

  • Retired the V1 for something with a bit more clearance… 38C run a dream on the V2

  • Hi there, a Medium size would fit for a 1m57 girl ? (I have this Medium size frame for sell btw located in France)
    thankss

  • Can anyone tell me if all Pompino forks are generally the same? For example would V4 forks fit earlier frames, or was anything changed?

  • That's actually kind of rad!

  • Is the owner of this On One On Here?

  • I’d like to run a front rack on my Pompino (a Pelago Rasket I have which is currently sitting unused). The OG fork I have isn’t drilled at the crown at the front, so I can’t mount the rack as-is. I guess the easiest option is going to be to change the fork for one which has the mount points I need? (I’m also running mudguards). What’s a good replacement canti fork with mounts and similar geo? Thanks

  • The easiest solution is to drill the front fork.

If you diy you need to use a center punch and a new metal bit would be best, plus cutting fluid (you could just use olive oil).

If you're not confident then lots of bike shops or mechanics will do it for you.

  • Here is my build after looking for a nice fork for quite some time. All in all, I am pretty happy how it turned out in the end.

  • So it is drilled on reverse?

If there's space you could install a problem solvers fender flute and mount to that:

Other alternative would be to straighten the rack fork crown bracket and mount fender + bracket to a Berthoud style eyebolt mount under the crown / inside bottom of steerer like this:

Also seen people flip the rack fork crown bracket and attach through the crown and fastne to the back with the mudguards, but requires quite a bit of bending / manipulation. (Also, again relies on having enough clearance.)

  • Hey thanks for this, really appreciate the detailed reply. Yeah it’s drilled at the back only. Unfortunately I think the clearance is going to limit things, but will measure/investigate a bit more.

And thanks @hugo7 yeah maybe drilling is the answer. Definitely wouldn’t feel confident doing that myself so one for my LBS. Any concerns about loss of strength from drilling the fork here when it wasn’t designed that way?

  • I would be surprised if it failed. I drilled mine out and used a pelago rack for years without a hint of bother.

  • Just get a drill and a 5mm bit, turn bars around so forks are backwards, put drill through the rear hole and go to town. It’s a pretty hefty alloy fork

  • I've ridden my V4 with drilled fork (done by previous owner) for over four years and all is well.

  • I replaced the fork on my pompino with a surly lht 700c canti fork. Not only made it fitting a pelago rasket a lot easier, it also gives way better fender clearance. Geometry is pretty much the same, i like it a lot.
