Powder coating tape is a good alternative, picked up a comment on here suggesting it and have been using it for the past 2y with great success. I actually prefer it to Tesa 4289, particularly if working in winter/cold when the Tesa can get a bit fragile..

Same here. Powder coat masking tape is much easier to use and much more reliable in use.

Is that the green stuff? I've used the clear/green tape that someone suggested for a while. I still have a roll of Tesa tape for road wheels that I've not had issues with.
