Colnago Dream Mapei

Posted on
  • After buying one of my dream (lol) frames from @Ludd last year before moving abroad, I am finally getting round to building it up. I want to use NOS/nearly new bits and keep it period correct (99 I think), but I have a couple of things I need advice on:

    • Record 9, Record 10, or 7700 for authenticity?

    • What bloomin wheels? I like the silver Campagnolo and Cosmic wheels from earlier in the 90s, but what the hell were they using in 99? Have a feeling Shamals were black then and I can't find any. Maybe I just get some old Zipps or something?!

A couple of pics of the frame stolen from Ludd's advert:

I will try my best to keep the thread updated as I go

  • Shimano Dura-Ace 7700. Mapei always ran Shimano on their bikes.

As for wheels I found this 1999 Team replica on pedalroom and this guy has used F.I.R rims on DA hubs.

  • colnagos had ambrosio excellence TQB

  • Built mine completely "wrong" with leftover bits. Curious to see how a correct build looks

  • I kinda like that! Apart from the saddle perhaps...

  • Cheers, that Mapei team have such a strong look.

C40 one of the next things on my wishlist...sold mine on here a few years ago and it still devastates me.

  • If you ever wanna sell one of those.... ;-)

  • 7 years later and I'm finally getting round to building this.

Managed to get a basically new Force 22 mini groupset for a steal and have ordered matching cranks to go with it. Not at all period correct, but should be fun to ride!

The rest of the bits were on the spares cupboard/lying around. No idea what the bars are as graphics were removed - think perhaps Deda or maybe Ultimate Use. Current plan is:

    • Change headset to a black one - need to transplant Cane Creek from old frameset
    • Deda Superleggero stem (previous owner cut steerer very short so need low stack)
    • Have some Praxis chainring to go on the Force 22 cranks
    • Maybe consider shallower wheelset, but that will have to come later...

  • Also contemplating removing the scrappy Colnago decals from the fork. I think the frameset is busy enough as it is...

  • +1 for keeping fork graphics, I like the silver headset, maybe acetone superleggera graphics when it arrives.

  • Have found replacement fork graphics, so will remove and replace.

Stem graphics definitely going - they are terrible.

  • The tubing and paint are so gorgeous. I remember drooling over the first Masters 40 years ago in a shop window somewhere near the BT Tower. Can't remember the name of the shop. A small place which only seemed to have OTT Colnagos on display.

  • After 8 years of messing around, I finally have it built up!

    Still to do:

    • Remove stem graphics (tub glue remover is best but I appear to have run out and wife's 'natural' nail polish remover doesn't seem to work
    • New, shallower carbon wheelset en route (Reynolds AR41)
    • Replace fork graphics
    • Replace chainrings with some Praxis ones I have kicking around somewhere
    • Contemplate headset swap but don't think I can find lower stack than the existing Record one
