Website help; Wordpress, online surveys

  • Hi all,

quick couple 'o questions I have.

I'm in the process of building a website that is based around a service business.

When someone purchases the product on the website (woocommerce) I'd like it to send a survey via email to that the customer. Once the customer has filled in the survey, I'd then like to send them a smart looking email back with all of the answers to their questions.

So far, I've made a small wordpress site with woocommerce, and then I've looking into Smart Survey for the survey, but how would I go about sending the client the survey autonomously when they purchase the products, and how do I respond to them with my answers with a 'professional' looking email, rather than just my regular email. Ideally, an email that is branded, has social links and just looks smarter.

    Thanks for any help :)

  • I've also been trying to find the answer to a lot of these questions myself.

Automatically sending a survey to a customer when they purchase an order. Woocommerce can be connected to Survey Monkey via this app: https://zapier.com/apps/surveymonkey/integrations/woocommerce

  • My first suggestion would have been to explore Mailchimp as your mail client, it’s free under a certain subscriber base (think 1000?) and then minimal cost. It’s well supported by many “off the shelf” providers and I’m sure there will be an in-built integration with both WooCommerce and WP.

You can then use Survey Monkey (same parent company I believe?) to create the email, sent via Mailchimp and have it all automated through the in-built integration with Woocommerce.

I do/have done this as my day job for a fair bit, feel free to DM if you want to talk through in more detail or want any other help!

  • Hey!

    Thanks for your reply :)

I did think of Mail Chimp, but once the customer has purchased the Woocommerce product, I need to send them 30+ questions (automated) that they fill in their answers. I then need to review the answers and then send them an email back with my answers to their questions.

  • So the survey is not just a simple “how did you like the product” survey? 30+ questions seems pretty in depth and time consuming to complete for the end user!

Most mail clients should be able to do this. If I understand the journey correctly:

    • User buys product -> survey gets sent to user -> survey responses returned to you -> you respond to survey answer

This to me sounds like a fairly simple integration. The email client provides the means of getting the survey from you to them in an easy and automated format. The user fills in the survey and you say where the responses go when the user clicks “submit”. This could be to your email address/business email/generic comments@ email or whatever you want.

Once you get the responses it sounds like you’ll spend some time reading and responding. If this is the case then there won’t really be any way to automate the responses (unless you’re going for some kind of chat bot) so your best bet sounds like a template with branded header/footer to make it look official, and then you put the copy into a central block that changes each time. This way you can have the set format that can be reused, and still allows you to personalise the content for each response. This may take some time depending on the level of response, but that’s the trade off between generic vs personalised content in emails.

The other advantage with something like Mailchimp is that it allows you to manage email consents and unsubscribes for you. If someone responds to a survey and says “do not email me again” then you don’t have any grounds (legitimate interest or consent) to contact them with your answers. You also might want to get some advice on whether and how far you can email users with the survey in the first instance. I know what my reading of GDPR and consent is and it’s fairly strict but I am not a lawyer, just based on experience of working in data and marketing sectors.

Sorry this got so long, lots to think about!

  • Chris,

ah, thanks so much for the amazing detail :)

This is a service based business, so there's no actual physical product. When someone purchases the service off woocommerce, and we sent out an automated questionnaire, the responses we give is actually the service.

. User buys service off woocomerce > Automated survey sent to user > user fills in questionnaire > we review the questions answered by the customer > we sent client an email with our answers to their survey statements.

The service I'm looking to offer is similar to a Best Man speech service, which is the closest I can find to the service type, but I'm looking to automate it and make it look a little smarter than what's currently being offered.

With this info in mind, would this be the best platforms to use? Here's what I've got in mind:

. Woocomerce for client to pay for service
. Zapier plugin to auto send out the survey using the Survey Monkey
. I review the answers, and type my answers into an already built HTML designed email

Is there an easier/better way of doing this, or something that I'm missing completely?

Thanks so much for your help :)

  • Ah gotcha. So the survey is the client defining how they want the product, then you provide said product based on their answers.

I’m still not quite seeing how the link between woocommerce/Zapier/SurveyMonkey works at present. In my mind I think the only bit your missing is the email platform to send the survey out, or will Zapier do that? If so, how does it know which email address to send it to? I’ve only used Zapier to automate Trello boards and wasn’t a massive fan. Seemed a bit fiddly and never quite did what I wanted. Was a few years ago so may have improved since.

You’ll also potentially find it easier having a mass-mailing tool/platform for your replies, as they will make it easier to set up different templates and send of professional looking results. They will also often have a range of free and paid for templates if you aren’t much of a html designer and/or don’t want to pay for one.

No worries, glad to be of help! Spend too long lurking on here so glad to help when I know what the topic is on!

  • Well, the idea is to have a Wordpress site (I'm the most comfortable with Wordpress, I have very basic skills on web design!) which then lets a client purchase 1 of 4 different packages (bronze, silver, gold, diamond) and they are then automatically sent a survey, where they answer all the questions asked (same questions for everyone) and then I review the answers and put my responses in an email, one that's been designed nicely.

I also need the facility for a client to be able to attach files (they can on Survey Monkey) and then I send them back via the email, once they've been edited.

  • If it’s the same survey could you not alter the receipt message from WooComerce to include a link to the survey, and skip Zapier altogether?

  • Well, I don't really want people to access the survey without paying for it before, and how would I offer the different levels of packages to a customer, and have them pay for it directly on the site?

  • Is anyone running a web shop? I use stripe on Squarespace but the fees are high. I'd like to use a POS like Redsys but it seems I can't run that with Squarespace. Trying to find a solution.
