I have literally just connected a Strava account to Garmin and yes 'sync courses' is an option alongside 'sync activities' which is required.
Fiddling with Strava now, I can't see how you change that - you may need to revoke and reconnect Garmin.

Anyone else had a Garmin 1040 Solar totally fail to record a ride?
Just got home, stopped timer and wondered why the ride hadn't uploaded automatically and looked at the History and there's no ride. I know it was fucking recording because I looked at the timer half way to see how slow I was.
WTAF? None of the older units ever did this. They did lots of other dumb shit but not totally fail to save a ride, unless they died during it.
I recorded a couple of minutes of nothing and that is the only file in the Activities folder for today. WTAF?
Have Garmin actually managed to go backwards with their iterations?
https://forums.garmin.com/sports-fitness/cycling/f/edge-1040-series/306732/lost-activity
\Garmin\NewFiles is empty
\TempFit contains 0 bytes file called "CptActv.bin.bin" and the only other fit file is the test one I did after the proper ride.
I recently disabled the prompt to add hydration/food details after a ride. I wonder if removing that and the unit immediately detecting movement again after me stopping the timer that it gave up on saving the ride for some reason.
Utter piece of shit though, let's be clear.

I have broken half of a locking tab on my Edge 1030.
After discussion on the french side of microco.sm, I have been told that the locking tabs are probably made of ABS or an ABS/PC mix.
I've thus been recommended, following the tables on p.21 and 41 of this document, either Loctite 401 for ABS or Loctite 770 for PC. They're both cyanoacrylate, so possibly too brittle, but the advantage is that they would be liquid enough to slip in the crack.
Loctite 380 might be a bit better regarding brittleness as it has some elasticity (though still a cyanoacrylate), but the bonding strength is ~5 times lower.A friend has also suggested simply completely replacing the back cover (as they can be found for around ~20€ on ebay), but, as that would mean breaking the seal around the screen, I'm worried about water ingress.
This is what I use for "long distance" stuff, Paris is very rainy and the Edge design isn't particularly weather resistant by default (the screen being slightly recessed into the body, the seal is doing all the work), so I fear it might die on me during a ride.Has anyone on here tried one of these successfully or has a better understanding than I do about bonding plastics?
(I would like to avoid solutions like DogEars, however functional they may be, as they feel too bodgy for my taste, esp since I've only broken half of a tab.)

Anyone else having issues with a link RWGPS -> Garmin account not syncing routes?
-
• #3381
Yes, yes you are.
"Our developers are currently investigating an issue preventing specific routes from wirelessly syncing to Garmin Connect. I will put your support ticket on hold so that I can easily get back in touch with you as soon as I have more information to share.
In the meantime, you will be able to manually transfer the route to your Garmin device as a TCX Course file. I've attached the file to this email and you can transfer it using the steps outlined in this guide: Manually Sync your Garmin"

I will probably be selling my Garmin 830 in a few weeks if there's any interest? There are no issues with it and it's in good (used) condition but I have made the switch to Hammerhead (gulp) and it'll be superfluous.

I thought their waterproofing was decent?

I have used B7000 glue with success for sticking plastics (although not a Garmin tab). Is pretty liquid to start with a narrow applicator so you'll be able to get it right down and is flexible rather than brittle. Needs a few days to cure fully.

I'd potentially be interested price dependent!

Cool I'll drop you a message when it's available and I've figured out a price that's fair etc.

Is anyone riding consistently with navigation via smartphone only? If so, RWGPS? Anything else out there? I have a wahoo, which is great, but for lazy touring where I'd like to see more POIs (shops, mainly) on a bigger/better screen, I wonder if a quadlock and an app is the way to go?
If so, I presume a power bank and airplane mode is the way to go?
(Obviously I could just experiment myself but (a) phone mounts are the expensive and (b) I'm lazy.)

I did this for a while a couple of years ago and researched a lot of apps. I did it for audaxes up to 400km and liked it.
I mainly used BikeComputer. The pro version costs maybe €8 lifetime licence. It's good, great display, does power and everything else I wanted. Has offline maps.
I found it better than rwgps as it has a night / dark mode and has a lot more data fields.
Rwgps is OK, a bit more user friendly, but only for daytime use.
BikeComputer doesn't have a lap button so, for doing intervals, I used Cyclemeter. That is a good app, also more user friendly, but doesn't have offline mapping.
If you don't use a power meter there are a lot more good options, eg osmand.
I stopped using it after an old Samsung phone burned out on a wet 200km in Wales. Phones are great apart from when it's really wet. But I still have another waterproof phone set up as a spare GPS and it has been fine in rain.
I still have osmand set up on my phone which I use on my ultra bike, alongside my GPS, when I want more route detail, context, pois etc.
I use velcro as a phone mount on my ultra bike. My gps phone has a stick-on Garmin mount that costs a couple of pounds and means I can use it interchangeably with a Garmin (or Giant / Stages Dash that I now use) on all my bikes.

Garmin 800 - return maps?
Yes I know.
Using a mac to connect to Garmin express.I had maps, I am sure I bought them legitimately once, and then some time ago, they just disappeared. How do I get them back, I have looked here https://support.garmin.com/en-GB/?faq=g9PbvR7queA7AoYCEZF5v8 and I'm still stuck, either I used an old email or I just don't have them anymore.
Do I have to buy them again or is where is good for Southern England, both on and off-road maps?
Thanks

Maybe look at https://garmin.bbbike.org/
Any time I need specific mapping for a place not covered by what's on my Garmin, I go there.

Another option I thought was interesting was Adrian's method which was to use a headphone plug and just rely on audio for navigation. Would take a bit of getting used to but saves screen time and protects the phone more.
-
• #3395
Does Adrian do that too? Will Pomeroy - who organises the crazy audax from Bristol to Glasgow and back - does it and says it is great.
I keep meaning to try it - but I would want to be able to have the option to turn on a map view if things got complicated. And to see data fields when I get a bit bored...
-
• #3396
Yeah, it's not for me. I like my on-screen info. Probably a habit I could train myself away from but there's times when audio wouldn't be enough and I hate taking wrong turns. Even with Garmins the delay in direction change can sometimes mean taking a wrong exit. It'd also be pretty crap for off-road I'd imagine when you get to a trail junction with 5 options and none of them exist on the map :)

I'm sure this has been asked a billion times before but can anyone recommend a gps with colour maps that won't break the bank? ( I am not adverse to hunting for a second hand older model or whatever)

garmin edge explore 2
You delete individual courses or you plug it into a PC and delete all the fit files in the Courses folder.
I don't know how Strava sync works, but with RWGPS, it will only sync routes to the Garmin which you have Pinned. So you can create 20 routes, finalise on one and then Pin it to have it shipped to the Garmin.
Sounds like maybe you should look for sync options within Strava.
