Thanks! That's what I did down at the chainstays. I guess what I'm wondering is, could I do the same going across the top of the mudguard (where the hole is in your picture), rather than at the sides?

Yeah, maybe this was what I meant to post

Instead of drilling and using threaded rod, you could use a vice or clamp to hold the formers

Ah, that's an interesting idea. So use a former above and a former below and clamp them together to flatten out the guard? That sounds doable.
