• 1cm gash in tyre wouldn’t seal
Emergency tyre boot and tube lasted another 70-odd km

  • I’ve tried different valves and squeezy bottles but I’m still getting clogging issues with OKO when trying to fill through the valve. It’s no problem for me to break the bead and fill at home but I’m worried about what would happen if I need to top up trailside.

Is this a problem IRL or am I overthinking things?

I guess I could mitigate the risk by carrying a CO2 inflator when on a remote tour so I could reseat the bead if it came to it.

  • Milkit make a water bottle/tubeless inflator that's pretty good for that kind of thing.

  • Thanks, I’ve seen that before and thought it was a pretty cool idea and much better than single shot cartridges.

Because I have nothing better to do I just unmounted the tyre and did a test with my Lezyne mini floor pump (which I take with me on tour). With surprisingly little effort I got the tyre inflated and seated again, can’t believe it went up so easily. Tubeless is feeling less scary now I know the tyre can be reinstalled without too much effort.

  • In the past year all new tyres across road and mtb (conti and Vittoria) have seated with a floor pump. I think the tolerances have improved a lot.

  • I put some Teravail Telegraph 700x30c on Fulcrum (?) TLR wheels Without sealant to test fit and they blew up with a mini pump and seated straight away. They have stayed up as well. But fuck they were a shit to get on. They seem pretty thick for light and supple they roll quite well though.
They are not for the MS honestly.

  • But old tyres get looser with use, and sticky with sealant. Sometimes I struggle even with the compressor.

  • And if it's a too tight fit it may refuse to seat unless you put a lot of pressure on it.
Then there's the possibility of the rim tape getting damaged as you remove the tire.
I'd rather have a less thick sealant for emergency and never unseat the tyre unless it's so badly damaged you have to boot it and use a tube.

  • OKO update. Fresh tyres on, probably 70ml sealant. 32mm gp5kstr at 64psi. Big audible puncture. ~5mm slash. Instant seal while riding. Another 50k home. 57psi on the digital gauge when I got back.

  • I am switching tyres onto different wheels and found this inside. Never noticed it happening.

  • Trying to mount some Vittoria mixed, don't usually have issues, though they aren't new. This time it seems to seat but once I let air out of the tyre to put the sealant in, it pops off the rim. Any tips on what to do?

  • Have you mounted these same tyres on the same rim before? Sounds like you might need more tape. Also, check the bead is clear from previous sealant residue

  • Another lap of tape to tighten it up

  • What gauge do you have BTW? have meant to get one for a while for traveling and general checking...

  • Topeak Smarthead. Very good and better than previous Lifeline one.

  • Update on my recent OKO story. The seal did eventually leak overnight. So it got me home but wasn’t permanent.

As I was going to do a patch repair from the inside anyway, I took the opportunity to remove the OKO sealant and see what Orange Seal would’ve done with the same puncture. It sprayed EVERYWHERE. No seal.

  • Which Oko was it?

  • #csb I’ve just run over a framing screw on one of the lawn tractors, I unscrewed the screw and the tiniest bit of sealant came out and the hole sealed instantly. OKO has been in there for about 2 years and I’ve not topped it up. I may put a plug in it tomorrow, I may not?

  • I’m on tenterhooks

  • I’ve not plugged it and it’s still up. I’ve been pulling the aerator around the pitch for the last few hours and all is good.

  • What tyre pressure?
Critical information missing. Crowd getting restless.

  • I'm going to run one of my 650Bs soon I reckon. I don't think I've used it in a couple of years as I have a dynamo wheel that was getting most use. Sealant is going to need topping up and I'm going to need to remember what fucking sealant is/was in it. Tubeless is such a faff.
