That sounds terrifying and I hope you’re healing ok.
The only thing I’d say is it’s a completely natural human reaction to want to avoid something after a traumatic experience. Give yourself time to come to terms with it, talk about it with the people close to you who you can be honest with about your feelings and be kind to yourself.
You might find some time and reflection allows you to process this and move on.
Take good care of yourself though -

Jeez, all the best for recovery - that sounds awful. Don't even think about cycling for the moment! Recovery and rehab are the priorities.
Perhaps when fit again you can see how you feel, but from my non-hospitalised position I'd say don't write off cycling in your head, or force yourself to do it again if you don't want to.
Hopefully an insurance payout will get you a sweet new bike day/something else positive!

Perhaps you could ease yourself back into cycling by riding somewhere without traffic, e.g. a park or a dirt track? Best of luck with your recovery, physical and psychological.

I found that I had to build up my riding after a nasty car/bike interaction. It took more than a year before I was at a similar level of confidence. I was back on my bike less than a fortnight after six weeks in hospital but only in very controlled circumstances and with no self-recriminations if I turned for home very early.

It happened with me. Had a bad crash when a motorist pulled out from a side road without looking. Fortunately I had no bad injuries but it could have been much worse, it was pretty scary.
In back of ambulance I said to the paramedic Id had it with cycling. However I was back riding the next day. I some how got over it very quickly. I guess if you have pain and injuries it's constant presence for you, and you may find as you heal the mental aspect also begins to subside. All the best for the recovery. -

I felt like that after getting doored. My injuries were far less then your still I lost a lot of confidence.
Enjoyment goes out the window with negative feelings. Take a break, find some enjoyable quiet rides in good weather, and eventually build up to your usual riding.

The thing that’s gotten me back cycling is the desire to be back on the bike, to be out riding again.
I never doubted it or worried about it. Accidents happen, some have been my fault, majority have been drivers fault. But the risk/reward balancing act in my head has always been that cycling rewards me, and the joy of wanting to get back on the bike outweighs the pain and boredom of rehab to get back on my feet.
So I’d say to you, listen to yourself if you don’t think it’s worth getting back on the bike, don’t. You don’t have to force yourself to overcome this. Only you can say if the risk/reward balance has shifted to it’s too risky for me.All the best with the recovery, don’t rush it, do the rehab, and be good to yourself. You only get one body so make sure you’re using it and looking after it well. Your geriatric self will thank you for it..

I got knocked off and run over by a taxi driver doing a Uturn without signalling. Many many physio visits etc and I was back on my bike without pain. But it took me over a year to ride down that road, even though it’s on my route to work. 4 years on and it still worries me to ride that bit. Shit takes time, don’t rush any of it. -

I've had a couple spills and broken bones recently but all my own doing so dunno how relatable but I think you just got to focus on all the good times you've had on the bike instead of the time(s) it's gone wrong.

Could you ride mtb/off road? Not without danger but fewer dealings with cars.

Please heal up well. Once you’re able to start, the physio will be crucial to rebuild strength and flexibility. All the best for a speedy and excellent recovery.
Oh, and regarding cycling it doesn’t really matter at the moment, so don’t make - or feel as though you have to make - any decisions about it now.

I’m assuming you have a lawyer/legal assistance, if they are disputing liability it will just make a long process even longer. If there are witnesses to the accident and a police report, you should be okay, and the personal injury settlement with broken bones, and being off work should be substantial.
From my case which was nowhere near as serious injury wise as yours liability was split 75/25 despite me getting left hooked by a van across a bike lane.
Do all the things your lawyer asks you to, see as many doctors as necessary, take care of yourself and rehab your injuries. It could take a year to 18mths, possibly even longer so don’t worry if it drags on.

If you do decide to get back on your bike stay the hell off Strava, Komoot, Garmin etc etc. Actually don’t post anything anywhere about going for a ride. Even a walk until everything is sorted and settled. -

Not my 1st, but this time quite serious: got took out by a dumper truck on my commute!
Two fractures, cuts and grazes, three nights in hospital and signed off work for 6 weeks.
Any advice, comments, or suggestions?
