ok to use the word gay in the old timey way
How old timey? The early modern (13th century onwards) meaning (cheerful etc.) is perfectly acceptable, although it can come across as wilfully archaic, or as a double entendre. The mid-20th century onwards meaning (homosexual) is widely used and accepted even in the best families, it is after all the G in LGBTQIA-Z. The early 21st century meaning (lame) is deprecated among civilised people.

So I've just been asked by my Italian friend if it's ok to use the word gay in the old timey way in general conversation and I was actually unsure. I leant towards it being ok but being basically straight I've no real dog in the race
