What's everyone watching this spooky season?
How would you like a review of "The Devil Rides Out"
by a specialist (academic, not fruit-loop) in the history of mysticism and the occult? His account
of how the vampire myth escaped from a remote corner of the Caucasus into the wider world is also pretty good. Most of his channel is niche as fuck, but there's also fairly accessible stuff in there on Lovecraft and the history of Gothic horror. And around half a dozen videos on Absinthe, for some reason. Watch his absinthe tasting tips, buy a few bottles, spend the rest of the month out of your tree while watching horror films. -

Nice, I'll check that out.
Speaking of vampires, the trailer for the Robert Eggers Nosferatu looks great. Will definitely try and catch it in the cinema. -

š My son loves history might be up his street too.
Vampire wise, Serenity, Stokers Dracula, interview with the vampire, a girl who walks alone at night, Thirst and shadow of the Vampire are some of my recommendations.

It is.
My favourite fact about it is that 'The Slaughtered Lamb' scenes were filmed in a pub in leafy Surrey, The Black Swan near Cobham.

Shadow of the Vampire is excellent! Manages to be a witty satire of the film industry and a pretty good horror film at the same time. Willem Dafoe is great as the vampire, and it's a shame that performance seems to be less widely known than it deserves.
My son loves history
Well, you can blame me if that channel takes him down some unexpected rabbit holes. I'm there for the guy's dry sense of humour and pop culture references. I didn't expect to find myself watching a video about how Yahweh went from being a minor war/storm god to THE god of three major religions, and I really didn't expect the Natural Born Killers shout out.

Well An American Werewolf in London was a treat!
Uniquely charming and so efficient. The WTFness is very strong and very appreciated.

• #21285
The original version of 'Let the right one in' should be on any Vampire list too.
-
• #21286
Yeah great film, quite unsettling.
A girl walks home alone at night too

Caught Sorcerer and The Outrun over the weekend. The latter was definitely the highlight (potentially triggering for those with hangups about alcoholism) but definitely good. Sorceror (1977) made for some unhinged fun

I love Sorcerer, relentlessly tense from start to finish. Not to mention the Tangerine Dream soundtrack.
I've not seen The Outrun but will add it to the list.
Edit: I just realised I've seen a trailer for it, it looks great. -

I watched something on Netflix called "Lift"
It has Kevin Hart in it, but he isn't being funny (I am not a fan, but I was hanging and it seemed like a perfect Sunday nonsense to sleep through)Entirely joyless. Seemed like a discarded Oceans Eleven sequel for being too shit, so they doubled down with some Mission Impossible stuff that made it even shitter.
Nothing redeeming about it. not even "so bad its good".

I went to the London Film Festival on Saturday. Yearly tradition that a mate picks a film at random and I just turn up and go in cold. This year we did a double.
1st: Eat the Night: a film about the impending end of a much-loved MMORPG. From the perspective of a younger sister obsessed with the game and her older brother. It's a really touching film and funny too.
2nd: Bionico's Bachata: This was a fever dream, just watch it and don't read about it too much. It was a wild ride.

The Substance is certainly something.

Is The Apprentice worth a watch?

Finally finished off Blade Rubber 2049. Absolute dirge piece of crap, hated every second of it.
Watched Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) as it's one of those that I've never got round to watching. Dated obviously but pretty good fun.

• #21294
I really liked Lade Brunner 2049 what's up with you all?!
-
• #21295
Do you also like watching paint dry? If so then we may have your answer.

Watched Threads the other day, not the best with a raging hangover. I wonder whether I actually watched the entire thing all the way through when it was originally on TV, as I didn't really remember all the foraging and pregnancy stuff? It was 40 years ago though...
Mrs EB had never heard of it and still isn't speaking to me š¤£

Maybe I do? Did you like Perfect Days?

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)
That's the one with Spock in it?
-
• #21299
Yeah, took me a minute to recognise him without the pointy ears. It was the voice that eventually tipped my brain off, very recognisable.

Remember it being OK, like you say bit dated no doubt. I want to say there's a scene with a dog with two heads?!
Bars don't come much lower.
